We recently connected with Michele Knox and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Michele thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
In my 30s, I enrolled in a professional art class in Las Vegas, marking my first experience in a formal setting. The instructor was pleasantly surprised by my painting, especially considering it was my debut. I’ve always had an artistic flair, whether it was through my passion for makeup or my love for digital art.
Michele, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up in a modest middle-class home with both parents and a close-knit group of friends, while also being actively involved in church. I’ve always had a free-spirited, gypsy-like nature, yearning for independence and eager to embark on my own journey in life.
Eager to enter the medical field, I left Louisville, KY, and moved to Phoenix, AZ, to pursue my education as a molecular imaging specialist. My career involves extensive travel, allowing me to experience the beauty of America firsthand. I channel these experiences into my paintings, capturing the vibrancy and elegance of the landscapes I’ve encountered. The bright colors and intricate details in my work reflect the stunning scenery I’ve witnessed throughout my travels across the country. For me, abstract art is a manifestation of my subconscious—an instinctive process. I never know what will emerge on the canvas; I simply follow the brush as it guides me toward my purpose and artistic journey..
I take great pride in my dual passions for science and art, drawing inspiration from figures like Einstein and Rothko. From moody abstracts to stunning landscape pieces, I embrace the challenge of blending these two loves in my work.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I’ve learned the value of making mistakes and working through them without fear. I used to put immense pressure on myself to create something exceptional, but once I embraced the idea of having fun with the process, I found liberation. Now, I take joy in the uncertainty and the freedom it brings.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I once believed that international exposure was crucial for my career, but I’ve come to realize that local coverage and networking are equally important. Engaging with people at local art galleries has introduced me to fascinating individuals who are eager to support me on my artistic journey.
