Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Josh Lumsden. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Josh, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’ve been in the “music world” almost my entire life but began actually playing around with producing when I was 13. I knew I wanted to sing but had really no idea where to even start, so I just downloaded music software’s and started playing around. Flash forward to now, I’m still kind of doing the same thing, but I find it to be a blessing. I now have the ability to 100% fully create my sound from scratch without having to rely on anyone else. It’s challenging for sure, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a multidisciplinary artist and musician based in NYC, originally born in Austin, Texas. I specialize in full self-sufficiency in all aspects of my music career, from production to directing music videos and designing artwork. My catalogue falls into various musical genres but all pretty much revolve around avant-garde pop/dance. Although I create independently, I do love musical collaborations. One of my better known singles was “Energy”, a psychedelic upbeat-R&B infused track featuring RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Yvie Oddly, and downcast dream pop single “Drowning” featuring Australia’s own Brendan Maclean. Another huge part of my work is the visual media aspect of the music. I have a string of supernatural and surreal music videos that accompany my singles, which I direct and edit independently. Basically, everything you see & hear from my music comes 100% from me.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I find that the most rewarding part of being a creative is the production process. It feels limitless, it allows me to try the hardest I can to create atmospheres and experiences that can’t be told in any other way. We live in an age where you can literally find a YouTube tutorial on how to do anything – which has for sure been a key resource when I want to involve something into a project that I really have no idea about. Learning and creating keeps me grounded & inspired to do more.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I had known that you don’t always need a lot of money to create something cool. There’s a perception in this industry that you need to have a 6-figure budget to create a music video, album, etc. You REALLY can go a long way with any resource you currently have – you just have to be ready to put a lot of the work in yourself.
