We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Drake Lopez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Drake, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I remember being 15 years old writing my band at the time’s first couple of songs. After performing one of our first shows we had a lot of positive feedback about our music. Being the writer/creative, it made me feel inspired and ambitious to see where writing could take me. Here I am at 30 in Nashville writing multiple songs a week and hosting my very own songwriter round!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Of course I’m a songwriter and I could go on about that, but I’d like to focus on my round, Good Company. My co-founder Gary Frost and I decided to create our own brand of a songwriter round with the goal of connecting artist/songwriters of all sorts. Establishing a welcoming environment with a little comical twist in the round. For example we like to do a quick interview for the crowd with our writers after each round by asking them a serious question followed by a funny one. This gives the crowd a little inside look at these writers plus a little comic relief through the night. We host at The Row in Midtown on the second Tuesday of every month, and we host at Tailgate Music Row EVERY Tuesday. Come see us!
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The most important thing is to be present! Show up and follow along with the journey. Now I know it’s hard to make that happen as everyone has different schedules in life, so another way is to simply follow the artist/brand page, like, comment, and share their posts! This helps engagement so much and helps spread the name around WITHOUT paying for promotions.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The connection it brings between people. So many people relate to stories they hear through music and it’s a beautiful thing to see how people can be moved, uplifted, or inspired by something like a song.
