We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sofia Martinez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sofia below.
Sofia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
One of the most inspiring projects I’ve been a part of was Yerma by Federico Garcia Lorca. I got to play Victor and other characters with an all female cast and all in Spanish play. This story is about a woman’s fertility and the suppression in the Spanish culture in Lorca times. I believe this is a very relevant topic even nowadays because of all the journey women have to go through to find their own voices.
I had a great time through this journey with Foolish Company and the latin community giving life to this story.
I recently got to play a part in a Short Film by Celeste Lanuza. Playing Teresa was
very special to me because it includes the inner secret journey a dancer goes through.
This opportunity led me to continue working with Celeste by being a part of her dance company.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started dancing when I was 5 years old back in Mexico.
I used to perform for my family at my grandma’s house or at the school recitals but I never thought I could do that as a job.
When I was 16 years old I played Zazu in The Lion King and discovered I could also sing and act in theater. I fell in love with musical theater.
In 2018 I went to London to a musical theater summer camp. I started watching as many musicals as I could. When I watched Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables I fell in love with musicals even more.
Later that year I auditioned to AMDA College in Los Angeles and got accepted.
Moving to LA was a whole challenge and experience. When I arrived to the city I was very afraid, I felt small in between so many great and talented artists.
I’ve learned about discipline and courage in taking daily actions towards my dreams and that has led me to find opportunities in this country. Now the city and people feel closer to me.
I am currently learning about the craft of storytelling at The Imagined Life theater studio by Diana Castle.
I am working as a music director and choreographer for Aristocats kids the musical which will be presented next year.
I am also working on my first singing recital which I will be announced soon in my social media.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
One of my biggest goals in my creative journey is giving a voice to Latin American women through storytelling and inspiring the people around me. Another goal is to bring more art to La Paz, my little hometown in Mexico and produce a play in the theater I grew up by bringing opportunities for actors, dancers and singers back home.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the constant of uncertainty, a big curiosity about life and humans, and the constant of change in your life. I believe every story, every project you get to be a part of, will change your perspective of life and will widen your horizons to what’s possible.
