We were lucky to catch up with Anthea Levi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Anthea, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I began my career in journalism. After college, I thought I wanted to be a magazine writer and by truly right-place-right-time luck, I made it happen. My days were full of interviews with industry experts (doctors, sex therapists, personal trainers, you name it) for stories I was writing. While I loved connecting with all different people, I found myself drawn to the work of the registered dietitians I interviewed. I was taken with the idea that you could fundamentally change someone’s life by tweaking their diet. After all, everyone needs to eat, multiple times per day, every day. If we can optimize our diets for our unique bodies, we can do anything.
My desire to leave journalism also came from a place of wanting more connection. While my stories could theoretically be read by thousands online, I craved meaningful face time. I wanted to see and understand the individuals I was educating. I wanted to be the expert instead of merely quoting experts.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a registered dietitian nutritionist and the founder of the virtual private practice, ALIVE+WELL Nutrition. I work one-on-one with clients looking to optimize their diet for inside-out health. I love that each client I see comes to me for a different reason. It keeps my job interesting (and challenging!). Some people work with me to manage a chronic health condition while others are in desperate need of healing their relationship with food and their body. Often, it’s both. We work together as a team to find a way of eating that feels sustainable, enjoyable, and meets their medical needs. I help my clients solve everything from ‘What should I eat for a balanced snack?’ and “How can I prevent my type 2 diabetes from progressing?’ to ‘How would I even begin to work on my body image?’
I’m most proud of the utmost attention I give to my clients. Every plan is tailored to their needs and I provide comprehensive support in between sessions so they never feel alone in their health journey.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
So far, connecting and collaborating with other healthcare providers has been the most effective way for me to grow my client base. Whether it’s through personal connections or cold calls, contacting and meeting with doctors has helped me obtain more new clients than any other avenue.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’ve had to unlearn that more is more. I want to help people as much as possible as quickly as possible. As a result, I’ve found myself overloading clients with information and resources. But sometimes this backfires and overwhelms people. I often have to remind myself to simplify. The smaller and simpler the goals, the more likely clients are to meet them.
