We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Danielle Tortorello. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Danielle below.
Hi Danielle, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
It took me a long time to discover my own style. In my late twenties, I began incorporating men’s clothing into my wardrobe, blending it with the women’s pieces I typically wore. The transition was gradual, and even after I stopped wearing feminine clothes altogether, I still reached for a dress at formal events because I didn’t know what else I could wear and still feel presentable. I would try men’s suits on in a size XS but the jackets were too large and the pants too narrow and long.
Eventually, I found certain European brands that catered to smaller sizes in men’s clothing, but these options were often expensive and still required tailoring to fit properly. That experience fueled my mission: to create high quality, affordable pieces for women like me who embrace an androgynous style. I wanted to make it easier for women to find clothes that fit their bodies without having to search endlessly for brands or rely on tailoring.
I hope my brand helps young women who are growing into their own style find pieces that resonate with them without having to piece together men’s and women’s clothing just to make it work. I know firsthand how challenging that can be, and I’m passionate about creating a solution.
Danielle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Danielle Tortorello, co-founder of ALGND, a clothing brand I launched with my wife and business partner, Jennifer Stano. ALGND was born out of a shared love for fashion and a desire to create something uniquely our own. During the pandemic, as we continued engaging with our social media communities, we recognized an opportunity to launch a brand that authentically reflected our personal styles. I had long noticed a gap in the market for women, like myself, who prefer an androgynous aesthetic. Men’s clothing wasn’t designed with a woman’s shape in mind, so I was driven to create pieces that align with my style while being tailored to fit a woman’s body. It became a personal mission to fill this gap, as I had spent years searching for clothing that captured my aesthetic but also fit me well.
Jen, with her background in fashion, saw an opportunity to elevate and refine classic designs. Together, we brought ALGND to life, merging our distinct visions to create a brand that celebrates individuality, inclusivity, and quality.
I’m especially proud of the feedback we’ve received from customers who feel we’ve perfected both the fit and quality of our pieces. Our return rate is exceptionally low, which tells us we’re delivering on our promise. It’s important for customers to know that we’re hands on in every aspect from fit and fabric to the unique design elements that make each piece distinctive. For example, our Westchester Leggings have a seamless front, our NY Sweatpants provide extra hip room and a deep zippered pocket and our WP Muscle Sweatshirts feature inside out seams with a raw hem. Every item is tested by us personally; we want to ensure each piece not only looks great but also feels comfortable. We’re constantly refining to ensure each piece is something we’re proud to wear and share with our customers.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele has been prioritizing exceptional customer service and maintaining consistent, thoughtful marketing. We ensure every order is shipped within 48 hours, and each package includes a handwritten note. We pay close attention to detail, and when we notice a customer making a second or third purchase, we express our appreciation in their thank you card.
We also stay actively engaged with our customers on social media, involving them in upcoming launches by asking about their favorite colors, styles, and more. Our weekly newsletter is sent at the same time each week, and we use text messaging to keep customers informed and connected. In addition, we post regularly on both our personal and brand social media platforms and run targeted weekly ads.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I’ve successfully managed and led large teams for over 20 years, and I’ve found that clear communication and expectations are essential. I always outline expectations in writing and review them with the team, recognizing that everyone learns differently. I carry this approach into scheduling and hold monthly meetings to discuss individual goals, ensuring team members feel they’re growing within the company.
Keeping communication open is crucial, and I strive to create a positive environment while maintaining a clear line between business and personal matters. Leading by example is key; I believe you can’t expect 100% from your team unless you’re giving 110%.
To keep morale high, I make sure everyone feels valued and part of the team. I often look for their input on problem solving and decision making. Friendly competitions with rewards, as well as treating everyone to lunch, are some of the ways I show appreciation and maintain positive relationships at the workplace.
