We were lucky to catch up with Megan Morbid recently and have shared our conversation below.
Megan, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Honestly I first knew I wanted to go down the artistic path when I was in middle school. I was always the odd one out, more interested in art and drawing than any other subject, and middle school is when I started going to haunted houses with friends.
I immediately took to the world of haunted houses. The first one I went to had me enraptured. I was amazed with the details, how people looked, how people took on these personas. It amazed me in a way I didn’t know I could be amazed.
I started practicing makeup shortly after I went to my first haunt. It wasn’t very good mind you, but I was so happy. Down the line, farther into Highschool I ended up getting to act for a haunt, and that was the MOMENT I knew I would do this stuff for the rest of my life. I wanted nothing more than to be as involved in the haunt industry as I physically could be. Scaring people, creating monsters…It just all has such a good hold over my heart.
Megan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For those who may not know me. Hi, I’m Megan Morbid, full time nightmare creator.
I have been in the SFX and haunt industry since I was in high school. Started out as just an actor and have evolved into line actor, makeup artist, and scenic designer!!
Makeup is truly my passion. I love being able to turn a normal human into a terrifying creature. I can do pretty makeup too, but special effects is my world. From face painting to body painting to applying prosthetic pieces, I’m your ghoul. I can do a little bit of everything.
I try to not only provide quality makeups, but also give my models/clients a fun experience while they’re in my chair. I am also extremely versatile, not only can I do makeup but I can do scenic work (set design as most people call it) and act. I put my heart and soul into everything I do, I just love what I get to do so much.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It’s most rewarding to get to see my work in action.
If I get the chance to see an actor that I’ve done their makeup for the night, in their set and doing their thing, I am so happy to see the makeup aiding them in selling their stories and scaring the heck out of people!! Getting to hear the reactions from patrons who witness the makeup I’ve done giving various compliments verbally and by their initial look on their faces seeing it. It’s very rewarding.
Also when the actors themself come to me and tell me how much they loved the makeup I did, and how well it worked for their act, I know I’ve done my job right.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The biggest resource that no one truly tells you about is your fellow creatives. I have learned so much more from my fellow makeup artists than anyone else!!
Everyone uses different techniques and has their own way of doing things. Getting to work alongside other very talented creatives has changed the way I do makeup. I’ve watched, asked, and picked up on little things here and there over the years that helped me step up my own makeups. Always be willing to learn, and be open to growth.
