We were lucky to catch up with Mikki St.germain recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mikki, thanks for joining us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My dad was one of the hardest-working individuals I’ve ever known. He held a full-time job during the week and took on side work on weekends. As the oldest child, I often went along to help, learning practical skills like pouring concrete, repairing roofs, chopping firewood, and even basic car maintenance like changing oil and tires. My favorite moments with him were spent watching football together. Through these experiences, he instilled in me a strong sense of independence and resilience, teaching me that I could accomplish anything and that I should never let anyone tell me otherwise.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The idea for *KeepOnSharing* came about during the COVID-19 pandemic when I was focused on building my podcast. I grew frustrated with the limitations I encountered in trying to share my content across major social media platforms. My posts often went unseen by followers, and I repeatedly received notifications that my content “violated community standards.” I was surprised—content like my interview with astronaut Story Musgrave, who deployed the Hubble telescope, seemed far from controversial.
I wasn’t alone in this experience; many of my friends with businesses faced similar roadblocks. That’s when I began exploring what it would take to create a platform that allows users to freely promote their businesses, events, and services without restrictive limitations. I made a bold decision: *KeepOnSharing* would return 50% of all advertising revenue to users while strictly protecting their data by never selling or sharing it with third parties.
The realization hit me that large social media platforms thrive entirely because of user-generated content, and they profit primarily from advertising and data sales. If one platform can generate $134 billion with 98% of its revenue coming from ads, I knew I could build a platform that respects its users as true partners, sharing that success back with them.
We launched in July 2023, and we’re already approaching a million users. I’m proud to be the CEO and Founder of *KeepOnSharing*, where we treat our users like partners, not products.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
When I started *KeepOnSharing*, I was introduced to a Women’s Business Center that connects women business owners with potential investors. Their mission is to help women get funded, so I went through the whole process—35 interviews, 510 applications, and submitting my business plan, pitch deck, and financial statements. After all that, I’m proud to say I’m self-funded.
Here’s my advice: go into your business with the mindset of achieving it on your own. If funding does come through, see it as a bonus that can help you reach even further. Not everyone will understand your vision, and that’s okay. As long as you stay laser-focused, know the impact you want to make, and stay clear on who benefits from your work, success will follow.”
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Competing with large platforms can be daunting, and I’ve heard more times than I can count that I won’t succeed because of the competition. But I believe people are smart and have valuable content to share—it’s actually their content that sustains these bigger platforms. My job with *KeepOnSharing* is to bring that insight forward, to highlight and genuinely appreciate the contributions our users make, and to reward them for being part of our community. Failure isn’t an option for me. Every day, I work to make sure each user feels valued, and if that means attending networking meeting after networking meeting, I will, until every business owner is familiar with *KeepOnSharing*.
