We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lee Kim a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lee thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
As an attorney, analyst, and advisor with deep expertise in AI, privacy, and cybersecurity, I offer a forward-looking perspective that combines legal insight with technical expertise to address today’s and tomorrow’s challenges. I hold an AV Preeminent peer review rating, reflecting my commitment to excellence in law. With a unique blend of skills across privacy, cybersecurity, and AI, I help organizations worldwide navigate the increasingly complex intersections of AI, technology, privacy, and law.
Speaking and advising globally, I empower leaders to tackle these issues responsibly and to prepare for what lies ahead. Recently, I spoke on an international cybersecurity panel, held in French and English, on AI scams, and presented on critical infrastructure protection, drawing on my experience as an analyst in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Analytic Exchange Program. I am regularly quoted in the media as an expert, including major outlets like Politico, USA Today, Associated Press, the Chicago Tribune, Huffington Post, National Public Radio, and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation News.
Looking ahead, I am excited to continue advising and speaking domestically and internationally to stakeholders on the evolving impacts of privacy, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and applicable laws and regulations. My strength is in being able to provide in-depth perspectives of what is happening here at home and abroad. I am highly motivated to help build a world that is resilient, well-resourced, and prepared for what is to come by sharing insights and know-how.
Lee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
With a foundation in chemistry and experience as an IT professional, I sought to apply my scientific and technical skills and pursued a law degree. Subsequently, my law practice evolved to advising businesses on privacy and cybersecurity matters, including guiding clients through security incidents and breaches. I earned an AV Preeminent peer review rating as an attorney. Ultimately, I chose to focus my career on cybersecurity, privacy, and technology.
Today, I advise stakeholders on artificial intelligence, privacy, and cybersecurity matters. I regularly speak at domestic and international conferences, contribute expert insights for major media, and advise both public and private sectors.
My unique background across technical, legal, and policy arenas enables me to address complex AI, privacy, and cybersecurity challenges with clarity and actionable insights.
I have a strong record with more than 200 speaking engagements, over 300 media mentions, and 76+ publications on these topics. Major media outlets, including the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Politico, and National Public Radio, regularly seek my expertise. I speak domestically and internationally, including in the United States, Canada, Italy, and beyond, where I address both public and private sector audiences across a range of industries.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation is built on a commitment to helping others and creative problem solving. By striving to understand challenges from all perspectives, I provide insights and solutions that are both meaningful and actionable. No issue is too complex to resolve.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I studied chemistry in college with the goal of becoming a scientist, but after graduation, I applied to both chemistry and technology roles. During an interview with a major company, I was asked about my experience in IT. Although I did not have professional experience in the field, I emphasized my ability to learn anything. This led to my first role in IT and marked the start of my career journey. Learning and adapting to new circumstances are directly correlated to success.
