We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stephanie Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Stephanie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Taking the leap to become a Cancer Doula was a pivotal moment in my life, one that allowed me to embrace my true calling and purpose. After 27 years in healthcare, I found myself at a crossroads. I had always been the person friends and colleagues turned to for support, but it wasn’t until I faced my own battle with cancer that I realized just how much was missing from the traditional care model.
My journey as a cancer survivor, coupled with my husband’s own cancer experience, opened my eyes to the gaps in emotional and spiritual support during treatment. Sure, the medical care was there, but what about addressing the fears, the uncertainty, and the profound life changes that come with a cancer diagnosis?
It was about four years ago when I started working with a life coach that things really began to shift for me. She helped me see the bigger picture of life and question the beliefs I had blindly followed for so long. I started to explore universal laws and open my mind to new possibilities. This process of self-discovery led me to reflect on my past experiences – divorce, single motherhood, cancer – and recognize how they had shaped my resilience, determination, and values.
As I continued to dive into personal development, I felt a growing urge to use my experiences to help others. The idea of becoming a Cancer Doula began to take shape. I knew it was a risk – leaving a stable leadership position in the medical field to start a business in a relatively new field. But something inside me knew it was the right path.
Starting this business has been a journey of its own. It’s not just about coaching women through their cancer journey; it’s about addressing the whole person – mind, body, and spirit. I’ve had to learn the ins and outs of entrepreneurship, navigate the challenges of introducing a new concept to the cancer community, and constantly push myself out of my comfort zone.
One thing I’ve learned – taking this risk has been incredibly rewarding. Not only am I able to provide the kind of support I wish I had during my own cancer journey, but I’m also continuing to heal and grow myself. Every client I work with teaches me something new and reinforces why I took this leap in the first place.
This journey has allowed me to uncover my authentic self and tap into what I truly have to offer the world. It’s not always easy, and there are definitely days when I question my decision. But then I’ll get a message from a client telling me how our work together has transformed their cancer experience, and I know I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.
Taking this risk has shown me that it’s never too late to reinvent yourself and pursue your passion. It’s about trusting your instincts, embracing your experiences – both good and challenging – and using them to make a difference in the world. For me, becoming a Cancer Doula wasn’t just about starting a business; it was about honoring my journey and using it to light the way for others.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
As a Cancer Doula, I believe that beyond training and knowledge, the most helpful qualities for succeeding in my field are empathy, compassion, and personal experience. Here’s why:
Empathy and Compassion
Having a deep sense of empathy and compassion is crucial in this work. Cancer patients are going through one of the most challenging experiences of their lives, and being able to truly connect with their emotions and experiences is invaluable. It’s about creating a safe space where clients feel understood and supported without judgment.
Personal Experience
My own journey with cancer has been instrumental in my ability to connect with and support my clients. Having been through the fear, uncertainty, and physical challenges of cancer myself and alongside my husband, I can offer a level of understanding that goes beyond what can be learned from books or training alone. This firsthand experience allows me to:
– Anticipate needs that clients might not even realize they have
– Offer practical advice based on personal insights
– Provide authentic hope and inspiration
Adaptability and Intuition
Every cancer journey is unique, so being able to adapt my approach to each individual’s needs helps my clients feel deeply supported. This requires a strong sense of intuition and the ability to read between the lines of what clients are saying (or not saying).
Holistic Perspective
Success in this field also comes from embracing a holistic view of health and healing. Understanding that cancer affects not just the body, but also the mind and spirit, allows me to offer more comprehensive support. This includes being open to and knowledgeable about various complementary therapies like aromatherapy and Reiki, which can be incredibly beneficial alongside conventional treatments.
Emotional Resilience
Working with cancer patients can be emotionally taxing. Being able to maintain my own emotional well-being while supporting others through their challenges is essential for long-term success in my work.
By combining these qualities with my training and knowledge, I’m able to provide the kind of comprehensive, compassionate support that truly makes a difference in the lives of those navigating cancer. It’s not just about the information I can provide, but about the connection I can create and the hope I can inspire.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Based on my experience as a Cancer Doula, I’ve found that the most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been building strong relationships and encouraging referrals from existing clients.
In my line of work, trust and empathy are paramount. When I provide compassionate, personalized support to a client during their cancer journey, it creates a deep and meaningful connection. This strong relationship often leads to clients naturally wanting to share their positive experience with others who may be in a similar situation.
Word-of-Mouth Marketing
Cancer patients and their families often seek recommendations from those who have gone through similar experiences. When my clients share their stories and recommend my services to others in support groups, online forums, or within their personal networks, it carries significant weight. This organic, word-of-mouth marketing is incredibly powerful in my field.
Building a Community
I’ve also focused on creating a sense of community among my clients. This includes hosting support group meetings, workshops, and online forums where current and former clients can connect and share their experiences. This community-building not only provides additional value to my clients but also naturally leads to more referrals as participants share information about my services with others they meet.
Sharing my knowledge and expertise through various channels has also been effective. I regularly speak at local health events, community events, and maintain an informative blog. This positions me as an expert in my field and often leads to inquiries from potential clients who have read or heard about my work.
This relationship-focused, referral-based approach has been the most effective for growing my clientele as it aligns perfectly with the personal nature of my work. It allows me to expand my reach while maintaining the trust and personal touch that is crucial in supporting individuals through their cancer experience.
