Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Bader
Hi Michael, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up a music lover, as well as a musician, and while I enjoyed playing music I was always better at hearing it than playing it. After years in bands, time spent recording, and some life-altering concert experiences, I decided to get involved in music for a career, and learn audio engineering. After some years of solo-study, I went to audio school at SAE New York and really fell in love with sound in general! Since then I have enjoyed a diverse array of work and been fortunate enough to be involved in live events, podcasts, voiceover, sound-to-picture, audio lessons, and acoustic consultation, as well as recording and mixing an assortment of awesome music!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No path comes without pitfalls. I have been lucky in my career to have some truly amazing opportunities, but they would not have been possible without learning from the mistakes. Audio, music, and media in general, are very competitive. Figuring out how to navigate the professional world, how to properly network with clients, and how to adapt through constant changes is challenging enough. Pair that with the need to keep growing your skills to fight the “what else do you do?” problem and the obligation to consistently to expand horizons, it certainly can make for a tumultuous come-up. There are also not really clear, set career paths to take so a lot of it requires carving out your own lane, and figuring out how to stay in it or if/when to veer.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an audio engineer, I understand sound so others don’t have to…and make sure things sound good! There are a lot of facets to my work but the most important is troubleshooting, and adapting to my clients. (Also it helps to have a solid understanding of audio gear and signal flow, various types of recording and editing software, acoustics, electronics, etc.) I bring to every session and project a genuine desire, and enjoyment, for helping people achieve high-quality sound. I truly just want things to sound the best they possibly can, and if we can get that done efficiently that’s a bonus. I try my best to go into every project with a fresh and clear head to understand what makes it unique.
My specialties are drum recording, voiceover work, audio instruction and consultation, and I’m known for creative solutions… what can I say, I like puzzles! It’s always fun to get a call from a client, or fellow engineer friend, that’s found themselves in a strange sound situation and thought of me for a fix. I’m proud of the great artists I’ve gotten to work with, I’m proud of the foundation of knowledge I’ve been able to build for myself and others, I’m proud to be the engineer people call to help them out of difficult situations, and I’m proud that I can be involved in a field that I really have passion for and enjoy.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
That I’m actually an introvert?! People don’t usually expect that for a person who can talk as much as I can, but one of my favorite places to be is out on a quiet hike with my pup!
