Today we’d like to introduce you to Aminta Freeman
Hi Aminta, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story started in Guatemala City, Guatemala during a tumultuous time of civil war and genocide. My parents were brave enough to risk it all and we migrated to the United States. I attended the public schools in NYC and eventually found myself taking a leap of faith and attending Virginia State University (VSU). Attending VSU, changed the trajectory of my life. I met professors, mentors and peers that would open my eyes to a world of possibilities. I married and had two beautiful children. Life changed and I decided to bet on myself, divorced and moved back to NYC as a single mom. I was terrified but I started over. In 2022, I founded Moodie Vibes , a candle company with the purpose of sharing my love for candles and self care with mothers and mother figures. Candles become my outlet, my means of self care during a difficult time and I now advocate the importance of pouring into ourselves with aromatherapy. The Scent of Self Care.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The entrepreneurial journey is a continual ebb and flow of highs and lows. It’s not been a smooth ride but it’s definitely been a meaningful one full of learning and development. We have experienced periods of Moodie Vibes candles selling out and have also experienced slow sales. During these periods we have learned to seek the right help to meet the demand or slow down and pivot in order to focus on how we can do our very best in ensuring our customers receive the best candles and self care experience.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I started making candles in 2021 but have been a candle lover since I can remember! When I went through a divorce and I became a single mom, I turned to candles all the more as a means of self care. Candles helped create a space where I could pour into myself. As a creative, I hand craft in small batches using safe, clean ingredients and eco-friendly packaging. As a mom, I hand pour each candle with the intention of creating a self care experience for all but especially for Mothers, givers and nurturers.. What sets Moodie Vibes apart are our core values:
– To advocate the importance of self care for all but especially for Mothers.
– To give back by donating to Power of Two, an organization helping families heal from the root causes of trauma, helping children thrive and strengthen community. It takes a tribe.
– To use minimalist, eco-friendly/biodegradable/recyclable packaging as well as educating our customers on ways to upcycle materials.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I love soft rock! Most people know music greatly inspires the names and fragrances of Moodie Vibes candles but would be surprised how often to turn to soft rock when hand pouring candles. It’s a soothing and serene experience when coupled with a song by Phil Collins :)
