Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Bieber
Hi Evan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I remember watching a home video from my first birthday and my mom opened up a mini keyboard and shouted “This is perfect! Evan loves music!” I have always been obsessed with music, sometimes in an awkwardly uncomfortable “we get it” sort of way. In high school, I was a huge fan of pop-punk and my favorite band was Something Corporate, so I started playing piano to be like my idol Andrew McMahon. I played piano up until college where I started teaching myself guitar.
I always knew I wanted to be a musician and at some point for some reason (society? age?) I thought the dream was kind of in the past. During the pandemic, I started writing more meaningful songs and also had the realization that life is too short. I wrote a collection of songs and decided to release them as an EP called Reckless. That EP was a dedication to my younger self. I continued to write music, which led to my debut album Maybe I Thought About You Once. I love writing music so I continue to write as much as I can!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think anyone who says it’s a smooth road is lyingggg. I’m pretty sure any musician would say it’s not easy.
One main struggle for me is how to use social media to promote myself without it feeling like I’m trying too hard while I’ll also being myself. Social media is an important tool as an independent artist, but it doesn’t feel fun when it’s the main tool.
Another personal struggle for me is just focusing on myself and my music and remember that I’m doing this because I love writing and making songs. It’s so easy for me to compare myself to what everyone else is doing and I can be so hard on myself. It’s a work in progress, but I’m continuing to learn about myself and grow throughout the process of releasing music.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve been releasing music for three years now, and I feel like I’ve grown so much as an artist. I’ve had a few name changes throughout that time. I started off as 7Elevan and then I was Fading Out for for awhile. I wanted to feel a little anonymous and kind of hide a bit. I started to realize how important it was for me to be myself and release music under my name.
I believe I’m most known for my storytelling in my lyrics. I never intended for that to be my “thing” but I’ve been told that’s what people connect with the most, and it’s truly an honor. For me, songwriting is my favorite part of this process so I’m glad that people relate to what I have to say.
I believe my songwriting sets me apart from others because stroytelling is always the top priority. I truly don’t care about the traditional structure of a song (verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, etc). I just kind of write how I feel and see what happens.
I’m most proud of my debut album Maybe I Thought About You Once. I worked with Rob Chiarappa and he helped me to create the exact sound and feel of the album. Is it weird that I still listen to it all the time? lol!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I believe success is very personal and can only be defined by my own goals. I also think my idea of success continues to grow and evolve. When I first started writing songs, my only goal was to release an EP. and I considered that alone to be successful. Then, I started having bigger dreams about writing an album and performing more. Success is all about following staying true to myself and following my own goals, and hopefully not making those centering around numbers or streams or statistics.
