Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Thomas
Hi Nicole, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The fastest way to see the world and experience adventures without limits is to open a book. Reading has always been my favorite thing to do, it is what I would rather be doing day and night. I am a CUNY graduate holding a BA degree in Advertising and Public Relations but my love has always been the literary world.
In 2019 I reached a point in my life where I felt stagnant, I needed direction and a fresh start. As a Christian I take my direction from my heavenly father, so when He woke me at 3am one January morning with the desperate voice of a woman as she ran for her life and the life of her unborn child repeating in my head, I wrote it down and kept writing. That is how the first book in my fantasy trilogy started. The trilogy was completed a year later as well as a children’s book, corresponding coloring book and a spanish translation.
I am a hospitality professional by trade and a poet at heart. My goal is to spread light and love to my readers, to give them characters they can relate to. Characters who find redemption and hope despite betrayals, that they will see themselves reflected in some aspect within the pages and know that regardless of how or where they start in life, the ending can always change.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No it certainly has not been a smooth road. The last two years have been extremely difficult for me. As a self published author I am the head of multiple departments. Marketing, advertising, social media management, and so much more. But I was also a wife, a mother, and a lounge supervisor.
In 2021 I found out we were expecting our second child and It turned out to be a very complicated and difficult pregnancy. During that time my marriage disintegrated and shortly after our son was born in 2022 my general manager passed away suddenly. His death was the catalyst for that location closing and the loss of my job.
2023 found me as a single mother of two children with my books, my passion, on the back burner as I just tried to survive. I found a PT job and though we are still going through the divorce process, the children and I are healing.
I was able to get my website back up and running and finally starting to feel like we are turning a corner for the better. so I’m trying to get my business back on track.
It’s been a long delay, but not a denial. I know writing these books and sharing them with the world is what I was created to do. There is so much more in me, and even this painful breakdown of the life I thought I would have will be used to help others.
I’m far from done. Keep watching.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a writer and very proud of the books I’ve published. I have 9 titles on my backlist and love sharing my stories with the world. My debut book was the 2022 winner of the NYS INDIE AUTHOR PROJECT for YA Fiction.
As a multi genre author, I have something for everyone. My picture books have been added to classrooms across the nation and you could walk into any public library to request a copy of any of my books.
Many indie authors, like me, have tight budgets so we learn how to do things ourselves. Hiring out is just not always feasible. I love that about myself. I am constantly learning new skills and sharing them with others. I taught myself how to use Adobe creative suite and most recently Canva. I’ve learned about domains and the process of transferring them from one platform to another. But there is still alot to learn.
What were you like growing up?
I was quiet then and still am now. If you asked my parents they will quickly tell you how often I would escape into a quiet corner to read. My elementary school librarian joked that I should have the keys because I was always there!
And then as I grew, I used poetry to express my feeling and emotions. Words are so important, how we use them can create and destroy.
I have a large family so I really enjoy barbecues and just hanging out with them, but I need silence to recharge. It’s hard with two kids to get that time. Growing up I was the first to go to bed, and still when the toddler goes to bed so do I! But I’ll often stay up just scrolling or reading, enjoying a few moments of silence.
