Today we’d like to introduce you to Yashashree Samant
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Long before I became a 26 year young copywriter living in New York City, I was a curious kid constantly confounded by the world. I’d too many questions, too wild of an imagination, and too little time and attention to pursue every hobby.
Born and bred in Mumbai, India — I gravitated towards writing in school. Words shape narratives and narratives shape the world. Stories inspire creation, innovation, establish peace, their ability to weave magic or spew hatred. So when presented with the opportunity I took to studying mass communications in college, followed by internships, and further Miami Ad School.
I came to the US in 2020 to learn and begin my advertising career here. Several great agencies, mentors, friends, projects, and one too many decks later here I am trying to come up with new ways of answering questions.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Creative, writer, woman, immigrant – more the titles, more the burden to carry, India is an extremely academically oriented country. Although things are changing now, growing up I only witnessed people around me choose professions in Medicine, Finance, Law, etc.
A creative pursuit is more of an hobby, so to pursue what might be perceived as a “different” career path was especially tough. Not only did I have to convince the people around me in the beginning but also with time I needed to meet a certain standard of success to be accepted.
On the other hand, the struggle of being a woman and immigrant is a tale told over and over again. Representing each of these roles means there’s a constant need to do more, to achieve bigger, to find ways to tell stories, and stay relevant. But thankfully throughout this journey I have had a strong group of cheerleaders including family, friends, teachers, creative directors, leaders who make it all feel worth it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As I continued to fill this questionnaire I started a new role as Senior Copywriter at Publicis. And since it’s still my first week I’ll spare y’all the details of what I’ll do here.
My two cents for every job I have taken is to constantly keep learning, innovating, and coming up with ideas that make the world a better place.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
A paradox.
I was a menace at times constantly getting into accidents, letting my curiosity get the better of me, unknowingly stirring up trouble, refusing to eat my veggies… the list goes on.
But if I may toot my own horn for 2.5 minutes, I was also a pleasure to have in class, a fast learner, picking up hobbies almost weekly, competitive, a bit weird and yet a great friend (hoping my friends reading this agree.)
