Today we’d like to introduce you to Torrey C Butler
Torrey C, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
If someone showed you everything you would have to endure, losing friends & family, falling into depression, fighting every day for every inch to reach your dreams, would you still embark on the journey? That’s the interesting thing about following your dreams, that at some point we have to wake up and face reality first. What’s actually in front of us and how we want to move through it all. As I reflect on my story, my biggest accomplishment hasn’t been what I’ve been able to do for myself. I believe providing for self is always the easiest part. I focus on what can I contribute to help propel other people and their goals & how I could be a blessing to others.
My journey started when I was born. I take that back. It started before I was born, when my mom migrated to Miami, Florida in the early 90s. Born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas, she understood early that there was more to life than what she grew up experiencing. So, to take a leap of faith, once she was old enough and had just enough money for a one-way plane ticket, she moved to Miami. Ironically, her new journey was the start of my story.
Fasforward to today, I find myself thinking about the times we went hungry, lost family, fell into depression, yet we still had joy. We had the one thing people go their entire lives without experiencing – joy. The one thing no one could take away because we knew as long as we kept showing up every day, life would eventually work itself out. And it has worked itself out.
That was how I started, but more importantly, how I got here today. Don’t take life too seriously, have some fun.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life is really what you decide to make it. There are people that don’t have much materialistically but are some of the happiest people on earth. I know that to be true because I was one of them. We didn’t have much to buy, much to wear, or much to look forward to, but the joy and gratitude we had for our health and each other made the road much smoother.
Foundationally, that is extremely important. Life is always going to have a vote in what happens to and around you. I’ve went without for a long time. But in the moments where everything seemed to be overwhelming and unbearable, I realized the road was being paved to reflect my destination. It’s less about the road you take but more about the direction it goes. I’ve decided no matter how rough the road is, if it leads to dreams, goals, and purpose, I am going for the ride.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am the CEO & founder of Scribble, a social platform encouraging storytelling by bringing together authors, readers, and resources. For authors and writers struggling or unmotivated to start writing, find vetted publishing resources or lack sufficient book sales, we increase our authors exposure to readers, reduce the amount of time to publish, increase revenue streams, and provide a safe and secure platform for the literary community.
This is an interesting story and I’ll be honest. I never saw myself leading a business or as an entrepreneur. Ever. That just wasn’t the goal. But I’ll tell you what the goal was – to help people and to leave this place better than I found it. Because those have been my objectives, I always find myself in uncomfortable positions in life. I chase purpose, not titles or accolades. Just the genuine notion of caring for people and problems they face. I believe that has carried me through various ventures, especially Scribble.
The idea for this platform came to me in 2021. I published my first book during the pandemic, after four years of struggling through the writing process. I found myself confused, as I lacked clear direction, adequate knowledge about publishing resources, and the daunting task of marketing. Everything about writing a book is extremely inefficient. And if I felt this way, how many others could say the same?
From that, Scribble was born. To provide authors with opportunities, increased visibility and inclusion to ensure all backgrounds and stories are represented and celebrated. This is also a means to serve my purpose in real time, helping people and leaving this place better than I found it.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
At heart, I am still the same kid that grew up in Atlanta. Then I was cool, calm, and collected. Today, I am still cool, calm, and collected. A lot of what I learned and saw as a kid helped to develop my approach to life. For example, Atlanta is the capital of roasting people. In other words, clowning other people is the way of life. No matter what your situation is or what you were dealing with, you had to be able to hold your own to make it through the day.
With that dynamic, learning to hold my own, adapt, and adjust stayed with me and helped me to look at conflict and adversity differently. Things are always going to happen life, whether we want them to happen or not. The real test is how we deal with them. I have approached conflict and adversity the same way I approached my friends in sixth grade ready to roast. “Let’s get to it, let’s get through it.”
