Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Turner
Hi Destiny, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be a singer. As I got older, I realized I enjoyed more than just the singing. Entertainer is the title I now choose for myself. My interest began with programs at my church and talent shows at my school. Around age 10, I began taking classical voice lessons. By age 11, I was the only 6th grader allowed into the musical theater program. My path took a turn in high school when I opted to go to an academics focused high school. Although rated the #1 high school in America, there were no arts programs to participate in. However, in college, I scored a music program scholarship and joined the school’s choirs. In 2018, I went professional and I’ve been growing ever since.
I’ve opened for Grammy-award winning artists like SILK and Joe and had my original music co-signed by award winning artists like Tank. It’s a never ending journey or trial and error. I enjoy trying new things. New sounds. New music. Discovery and balance are the two greatest things I’ve gained from my journey.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As cliche as it is, it’s true. Anything worth having is worth working for. Music truly has the power to heal us. I’ve met so many amazing people among this journey. I’ve had my struggles as well. Funny enough, budgeting is not normally the issue. With everything being so expensive nowadays, I’ve gotten creative and learned how to do a lot with a little. Resources and tools are very plentiful for the average – knowledge person like myself. Time management and dependability are the issues that I’ve struggled with the most. When you deal with multiple layers of people, everyone must effectively do their part. And sometimes, you can’t complete the next step waiting on someone to finish their portion. We all deal with life and it’s no easy feat. My biggest struggle thus far has been finding like-minded people who desire the same quality and extent of my goals.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At heart, I am a creator. I honestly do it all. And I always hope that doesn’t come off arrogant or rude, but it’s true. Working to stretch my budget encouraged me to learn how to do some things myself. It gently pushed me into the “let me see how well I can do this” mindset. I sing, act, model, direct, film, edit, host, DJ, compose, produce, make jewelry, do hair and makeup, etc. The list goes on and on. I love to start with an empty canvas and let my creativity take control.
At this time, I’m most proud of how far I’ve come. I’ve released 4 EPs (E.R., Genres, Karma, Genre’s Live), 10 music videos, 2 websites, and a jewelry/merchandise line called “Pineapples by Destiny”. I’ve won 4 Alabama music awards including “Album of the year” for 2 consecutive years. And with the drop of my latest single “Can’t Deal Witcha (feat. Bradfqrd D Plugg)”, I aim to continue taking unconventional routes and pushing myself further than ever before.
However, I’m more grateful than proud. Only I know the struggles that I’ve endured behind closed doors. I know that where I am now doesn’t match those trials. I know it was God who has sustained me and strengthened me through it all and I’m eternally indebted to Him.
I would say that my authenticity and transparency are what set me apart from others. I show the good, bad, and ugly of my journey. I choose not to be a pessimist because I don’t see the benefit in complaining about things I can change. Yet, I do invite people inside select portions of my life to show that none of us have it all together. Even those of us who always smile and hold our heads up endure tough battles. I believe displays of the manner help people feel a bit better about their own shortcomings and understand that the point of life is the journey. You will never appreciate the sunshine without rain. We only have one life to life. I plan to make the best of the cards I have been dealt and help encourage others while I am here.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I truly love giving credit where credit is due. I can’t do this journey all alone. Starting with my momager, Venita Turner! I just want to say THANK YOU. I know only a fraction os the sacrifices you have made to help me be where I am and it’s unbelievable. So many late nights, planning periods, covering my shortcomings. Sometimes we’ve filmed and decorated until 6:30 the next morning. I thank you prioritizing my dreams and aspirations. You have no idea what it means to have the support. Even in the midst of family and friends doubting my abilities, you have never wavered.
I’d like to thank my brother Russell Turner for being a listening ear and giving sound advice and encouraging me in my Christian walk.
I’d love to thank the producers who have worked with me and gone back and forth so many times to make sure I was pleased with the outcomes: AJ Hebrew, Bass Finatic, Cheez, Banks 2 Cold
I’d also like to thank the best engineer ever for being patient with me and offering great resources and advice: Bao Pham, Mixology Studios
These are my faithful few. They make the journey worthwhile.
