Today we’d like to introduce you to Krista Frahm
Krista, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I accidentally found copywriting after someone told me I “wrote great copy” and I thought she was saying I copied someone.
At the time, I was volunteering with a non-profit, writing social media posts, donor letters, grant requests, and emails. I enjoyed writing and was told I was good, but I had never heard of copywriting.
At the same time, I was working for a few healthcare companies as an occupational therapist, but it wasn’t a good fit. The schedule meant my kids were home alone more than I was comfortable with and I didn’t have the resources I needed at work to get ideal outcomes for my clients. I was frustrated and overwhelmed.
In hindsight, I see it was the perfect storm for change.
I enrolled in a copywriting course, highly skeptical but hopeful that I could earn a bit of money writing and drop my jobs.
Within a few months, I had secured paid projects, which honestly, blew my mind.
Since I was sick of healthcare, I started writing for other industries. However, I quickly realized that my passion was connecting people to the programs and providers who would help them regain independence, dignity, and quality of life.
The traditional healthcare system falls SO short for many people. I like to think writing clear, compelling copy helps these people find solutions.
As I’ve gained experience and outcomes for clients, I’ve transitioned from only providing copywriting to now being a marketing strategist and consultant. Copywriting is just one component I offer my clients.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not.
I was wildly unprepared for the personal growth that’s required when you start your own business.
i come from a from highly regulated industry, so I’ve always had clear expectations and boundaries. I call myself an occupational therapist only because I got the degree, passed the national board exam, and hold a valid state license.
I struggled to feel “qualified” to be a copywriter or business owner, and even now I occasionally struggle to claim the title of marketing strategist because there isn’t a governing body telling me I can use the title.
Another struggle is that I’ve had months with little to no income and projects that have not gone as expected.
I’ve also had seasons where my children felt that I was “always working” and “not available” for them. Hearing those words stings and makes you question everything.
One time, a graphic designer that I subcontracted quit mid-project because of personal issues and I was left scrambling to meet my deadline.
As a clinician, I dealt with rejection and people saying mean things to me, but it is still hard to have proposals rejected, outreach messages shot down, or clients end services. When it’s your business, it feels more personal unless you work to separate yourself from the business a bit.
I’ve also had to learn my capacity and how this changes with the seasons. For example, there are frequent wildfires in my area in August and both my kids have birthdays during this month. I had to learn the hard way that I can’t book projects during August because I can’t produce high quality work while we’re evacuating.
There will be struggles in any venture. Accepting this and trusting that you’ll figure it out is key to success in business.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Absolutely.
I’m a marketing strategist and copywriter for health and wellness practitioners. I specialize in email marketing, sales pages, and full funnels. I also provide LinkedIn ghostwriting services.
Practitioners are amazing at their jobs, but I know from experience that we’re not taught to market ourselves. My clients tend to have the same limiting beliefs that I did – that they can’t do anything outside of the healthcare system.
I love coaching and consulting with these practitioners and watching their businesses bloom and their confidence grow.
For the practitioners who already have their business well underway, I provide done-for-you copywriting and email marketing to take tasks completely off their plate so they can have a thriving business AND free time to enjoy their lives.
Two things make me the happiest in business:
1. Hearing clients tell me they made sales from the funnel or launch we did.
2. Seeing a practitioner learn to create authentic, effective, and value-packed marketing.
Whether I create marketing for them or teach them to create their own – I’m simply happy to see them succeed.
What matters most to you? Why?
Family. Flexibility. Authenticity. Impact.
Family:
My family is why I started this business and I strive never to lose sight of that. My primary job is to raise our boys so they become capable, stable, and responsible young men who do good in their families and the world. That doesn’t happen by accident.
Flexibility:
I value the flexibility to be with my kids, educate them, travel, and fit my work around our schedule.
I love the flexibility of having an online business. I can meet with a client on Sunday evening if needed, then take Tuesday morning off and drive for a school field trip. When the kids are sick, I can take care of them and shift my work to a later time.
Flexibility also shows up in the way that I serve my clients. I can meet their needs based on their unique set of strengths and challenges. I can customize my services and do what’s best for them, which is a change compared to when insurance dictated what I could or couldn’t do with patients.
Authenticity:
Authenticity matters to me because it impacts everyone’s mental health.
Filters, AI photos, fake income claims, and only sharing the highlight reels of our lives is bad for everyone. I strive to share the highs and lows. If a client doesn’t want to work with me because I’m not pretending to be perfect, I’m ok with that. :)
Impact:
If I can’t make a positive impact on my client’s business, I’ll refer them to someone who can. I’m here to create change and help them reach the people who need their services. I used to help people learn to walk and dress themselves again after significant illness or injury… I’m still driven by creating change and seeing the impact on people’s lives.
These elements work together to allow me to run an effective business, support amazing clients, avoid burnout, and model a healthy life for our children.
