Today we’d like to introduce you to Cyndi Maurer
Hi Cyndi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was very aware as a child. I often knew things about people without anyone telling me anything; I could identify other people’s feelings; & I was pretty good at anticipating people’s needs. I realized at a young age that I would sometimes see things other people didn’t see, & I quickly learned that these weren’t things you talk about. Throughout my childhood & teenage years I was always fascinated by people’s motivations, behaviors, & decisions. I enjoyed psychoanalyzing the people around me & looking for patterns in their behaviors. This early awareness & curiosity about human nature were the first signs of my intuitive abilities. I still knew things that no one told me, but I assumed it was because of my pattern recognition. (Spoiler: It wasn’t. It was me using my psychic skillset in my youth.)
Perhaps the next pivotal experience in my story was the death of my college boyfriend. After a year-long battle with leukemia for the second time, he passed. During his treatment, we had an argument, & I remember shouting, ‘Maybe you aren’t supposed to make it through this!’ This moment haunted me for months after his passing, filling me with guilt. But then, in a dream, he stood in front of me & said, ‘You didn’t make this happen.’ I woke up knowing it was his spirit speaking to me, which helped me start to heal, & further sparked my interest in the spirit world.
Fast forward to my first intuitive reading in 2007 at the Berkeley Psychic Institute. I’d had readings before, mostly tarot & strangers telling me things about myself. This experience was different. The people who sat in front of me knew things about me that few people knew & this was way before social media was in our back pockets. During a break, the director of the center talked to me about my reading & asked who the dead guy was that hung around me. My college boyfriend didn’t come up in the reading at all & there was no way anyone knew. I was blown away. I wanted to understand more. I wanted to learn more. I wanted to do what they were doing. And while I didn’t train there, I found a school that offered a similar curriculum. During my first meditation class, I felt incredibly seen & validated. Over the course of the next year or so, I started training as an intuitive, learning to read & heal energy, which marked the beginning of my professional journey.
When I was about six I told everyone I was going to get my doctorate. No one in my family had gone to college at that point, let alone grad school. Fast forward to 2009 when I paused my intuitive training to pursue my PhD in Childhood Studies at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Grad school really showed me how much I was not built for academia. However, it also reinforced my love for research, ethnography, & elevating kids’ voices. These experiences enriched my understanding & deepened my skills, which I later integrated into my energy work.
Returning to California marked the beginning of a transformative period in my life. I completed my intuitive training program & began assisting in classes, gaining deeper skills & insights along the way. One day, my teacher pulled me aside & said, “You have to charge more than coffee.” This statement spurred me to consider my skills, value, & worth, leading to a significant shift in how I approached my work.
Right before the pandemic in 2020, I filed for my business license. As the world went into lockdown, I was simultaneously launching my business. This challenging time forced me to adapt quickly, but it also provided a unique opportunity to grow & connect with clients in new ways. Now, in 2024, I have two fledgling businesses. The first, Into the Known, is a client-focused space for one-on-one readings & group programs. It also houses all my musings about the energetics of society, culture, & generational tensions. The second, Intuitive Tarot Academy, teaches others how to read tarot intuitively & connect with themselves on a deeper level.
In addition to these ventures, I continue to work with children & families, integrating my skills to support & guide them through various challenges. This holistic approach allows me to bring together my passions for intuitive work, education, & community support.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has certainly not been a smooth road. Is anyone’s? There have been significant challenges along the way that have shaped who I am today, but I’ll stick with three!
The first was the most difficult which was the loss of my dad in 2017. My dad introduced me to the school where I trained, & his support of my formal education & my psychic skillset meant the world to me. His passing was a profound loss that informed my world view & my approach to energy work. I pursue my passions with greater determination & in his honor.
The second challenge continues & probably will for the rest of my life. My life looks drastically different from my peers & those I have known my entire life. While many of them followed more traditional paths of career & family, I chose to take a route that was unique &, at times, uncertain. This path, which combines intuitive work with academic scholarship, is not one that many people understand or have taken. Accepting that my journey is unlike anyone else’s has been challenging, but it has also been incredibly rewarding. It has taught me to embrace my individuality & trust in the direction I’m heading, even when it diverges from the norm. Resilience, knowingness, & trust have become the pillars in my life.
Finally, explaining the “weirdness” of my life to others has also been a significant challenge. Balancing the roles of an intuitive and a scholar/academic often leaves people puzzled. They wonder how these two worlds can coexist. Over time, I’ve learned to communicate my experiences & passions in a way that helps others see the value in both aspects of my life. It’s been a process of finding my voice ^ being confident in the unique blend of skills & insights I offer.
These struggles have been difficult, but they have also made me resilient & more deeply committed to my path. They have taught me the importance of perseverance, self-acceptance, & the value of pursuing a life that is authentically mine.
