Today we’d like to introduce you to K. Brat
Hi K., we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began being interested in music at about five years old. My uncle can sing so as a kid he used to give me vocal lessons and have me singing songs off the radio with my karaoke machine. I grew up at an early age knowing that I loved music, and enjoyed being on a stage rather I was dancing, singing, or acting. Throughout school from elementary to high school I was apart of the arts, step team, dance teams, marching band, concert band, choir, ballet, jazz, hip-hop. The list goes on and on. I graduated high school attending The University of Alabama at Birmingham double majoring in Nursing and Criminal Justice. Around my sophomore year of college I began rapping in small night clubs freestyling, even entering rap battles to win money. My bestfriend Diera helped me come up with a name, at first I was going by my first and middle name because I was an aspiring singer. After realizing I had the talents to rap I started going by K.Brat. The name kind of stuck and the rest is truly history. I’ve gotten pretty far with my rap career as an upcoming artist, but I know God has more for me he’s just preparing me for that moment I catch my big break. It’s a process and being successful won’t happen over night when it’s God’s plan.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My mom getting sick in 2021 was a true humbling experience for me being the oldest of three. Before that, I was on a run with music dropping freestyles damn near everyday, going to the studio when I wanted to, and truly living life with my mom as my manager. My mom was hospitalized for almost two years, I had to step up and be a role model for my siblings Laila whom at the time was 13 and my brother Rashad who was 18 and fresh in college. It was hard because not knowing if I would have a mom after each visit messed me up mentally. I took on a big responsibility with the help of family members while she was hospitalized, and even when she was able to finally come home my grandmother and I were her caregivers along with home health. I feel like people within the city started to feel as though I had hit my peak which was the farthest thing from the truth, I had to take care of home first, because without my mom I truly would be a lost soul.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Being a female rapper or I’d like to call myself an artist because I am, it is really easy to be stereotyped by the words you speak out of your mouth instead of the artistry. I’m always pushing to set myself apart from the others. There is not many artist in Birmingham that if you even put my old work up against them they’re topping me. I’ve learned not to even think local, I’m trying to be mainstream on the level with big time names. Out of all of my accomplishments I am proud that through adversity I am pushing my way further to the top. I want to be able to look back and say wow I’ve come along way from having nothing to having something attached to my name as a artist.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My son has to get all of the credit! I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy named Higee Jr on June 22nd, 2023 at 1:27 am. From the moment I found out I was pregnant my biggest motivation was getting my career back on track so that I can someday financially support my son in all of the proper ways. When I play my clean music for my baby he dances, claps his hands, and smile. I feel like the best mom in the world because one day he’ll know I am busting my butt for him. My family has also been my biggest supporters including my boyfriend Higee Sr, they’ve pushed me to get back in the studio to create wonderful music for people to dance and enjoy. I couldn’t be more happier with how my career is going.
