We recently connected with Mekhi Franklin and have shared our conversation below.
Mekhi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Our mission is to celebrate the creativity and diversity within the young African American community, inspired by the need for greater inclusivity and representation. This mission is deeply personal, as I understand what it feels like to be overlooked or to feel limited by circumstances. Through projects like our upcoming fashion show and various photography initiatives, we’re creating a platform that highlights diverse voices and provides the visibility and support I once needed. For us, success means empowering people to follow their passions and contributing to an industry that welcomes everyone.

Mekhi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Mekhi Franklin. I’m a 19-year-old photographer, fashion show organizer, and creative entrepreneur from Washington, D.C. My journey in this field began with a passion for fashion and photography. My sister often brought me along to her photoshoots, which sparked my appreciation for the art. Over time, this passion evolved into a full-fledged career, as I pursued the perfect shot in every frame.
I entered this industry to help people see the beauty in themselves and give them an opportunity to experience something extraordinary. For me, this work is personal—it’s about making sure everyone has a chance to stand in front of a camera or walk a runway. Life is short, and if that’s someone’s dream, they should have the opportunity to pursue it. My goal is to create a platform where people from all backgrounds and those with creative aspirations feel supported and valued.
Today, I offer a variety of services, including hosting and planning fashion events, creative directing, and photography services. Currently, I’m accepting commissions for photography and organizing events, such as our upcoming fashion show. This event celebrates diverse talent and serves as a fundraiser to support young African American entrepreneurs in the fashion industry, like myself.
My work is all about creating a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment for everyone who steps in front of the camera or onto the runway. I’m committed to inclusivity, affordable access, and ensuring my clients feel seen, valued, and comfortable. I understand the importance of representation and strive to provide that for every client.
I’m incredibly proud of the community we’ve built around this mission. Seeing clients gain confidence and watching our events inspire others constantly reminds me why I started this journey. Knowing that I’ve created a space where people can express themselves fully is the most rewarding part of my work. It’s also an honor to participate in New York Fashion Week and to host my own events.
Above all, I want clients, followers, and supporters to know that this brand is about them. My mission is to provide opportunities, build community, and make a lasting impact by empowering people who may not always have access to creative platforms. I’m dedicated to making every piece of art and every event a memorable experience where clients feel seen, valued, and inspired

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Social media has been my best source for new clients. I use it to regularly post my work, which showcases my style and quality, helping potential clients see what they can expect. I also make an effort to engage with my followers, responding to comments and messages to build a stronger connection with them. Additionally, I use hashtags, collaborate with other creatives, and post client testimonials, all of which help me reach new clients and grow my audience. Social media has allowed me to build a community and keep my work visible to both current and potential clients.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One story that illustrates my resilience is how I handle the slower periods in my business. There are times when bookings drop off, or my social media engagement just doesn’t hit the numbers I expect. It can be frustrating and honestly discouraging, especially when I’m putting in so much time and effort into my work. But in those moments, I remind myself why I started this journey in the first place—my love for creating beautiful images and connecting with people. Focusing on that passion keeps me motivated, even when things slow down, and I see those periods as a chance to improve my skills, try new things, and keep moving forward.
