We were lucky to catch up with Charlotte Roy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Charlotte, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned how to make images by trial and error. Doing things the wrong way is necessary to learning how to do things the “right” way. Perseverance and determination are extremely essential skills to have when you’re pursuing a career in art, you need consistency combined with an extreme level of passion. I think, if anything, I stood in my own way of learning more. I used to be very set in my ways, but once I opened up to the idea that perspective matters, I began to learn and grow so much more.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a photographer and stylist who mainly specializes in fashion and portraiture work. Typically, I focus on more feminine subjects, and like to experiment with contrasting factors. My parents are both artistic, and I’ve always followed in their footsteps. But around the age of 18 is when I first picked up a camera, and from that moment on I knew it’s what I wanted to do. Since then it’s evolved into a world of my own where I style, creative direct, and photograph all my own images. Currently, I am most proud of all the connections I’ve made along the way of my short creative journey, and the people I’ve had the privilege to meet and work with. Personally, I want my work to serve as a means of escapism for people, a world where they can go to forget their troubles and appreciate art and beauty. I want people to know that it took me a long time to get where I am now, and it’s somewhere I couldn’t even imagine in my wildest dreams.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I am currently a student at Marymount Manhattan College. I came to this school almost four years ago, with a completely different career path in mind. I planned on being a creative writer, specializing in poetry. I knew I wanted to do something creative and artistic, I just hadn’t found the one medium that stuck. After about a year in creative writing, I changed my major to fashion marketing. This felt a little more organic to me, and I was able to maintain that major for a while. But up until recently, it just felt like something was missing. Until I picked up a camera, and knew immediately where I needed to be. I instantly switched over to a photography major, but still kept my fashion marketing studies as a minor. I couldn’t be happier with the place I’m in now, and only wish I could have been a photography major even sooner.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the intense passion I have for things is the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative. Being a creative or artistic person means you’re inherently extremely passionate about something, whatever that may be. The fierce passion I have turns into determination and motivation, which has brought me to the place I am now.
