Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jamari Perry. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jamari, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I have been earning a full-time living from creative work for the last 6+ years. I was working in tech for about 3 years and I didn’t feel like it was creative enough or that there was room for upward mobility. So I took a leap of faith and started working on a doc-series as a freelance Production Manager. It was very scary but I knew I had to do it. The project actually serves as my inspiration now for taking leaps of faith because the series was later distributed by the same tech company that I left. The journey was difficult knowing that I had to hustle to find my next projects in order to work consistently but I was able to start a family and grow a business that made nearly $1 million in the first year and has had wide social and political impact globally. I think although the process was scary it was paced beautifully because it was designed by God. I am grateful for all of the speed bumps and distractions along the way because it made me stronger, more patient and steadfast.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I’ve always been of the mind to pay it forward. I never want to be the only person benefitting from my success. I want to help people find their own success and purpose in life. It’s what drives me to be a producer because I get to be apart of the start of people’s careers and that is what I believe will be my legacy.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing the profound process of a mere ideation brought to life in production and then transferred onto the screen. It’s a beautiful alchemy of so many moving parts to create a uniform vision that will last forever. It takes a village to create a film and being apart of a village that is collaborative and forward thinking is powerful. I’ve been an advocate for social justice all of my life so using film as a tool to create an indelible impact is so rewarding and reaps benefits that are beyond my lifetime. When my work is done and I can no longer create, these projects and the messages that resonate with people will last many lifetimes and that is the ultimate reward.
