We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jett Foreman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jett below.
Jett, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
It has been a dream to be on the road so much this year, since the start of summer we have been on three tours. However, it isn’t always like that. When Jettee was first starting out we were playing shows wherever we could, mostly garages, backyards, and once a completely empty bar. I was at a studio one day, writing with some new friends when I met an artist named Jordy Searcy. We got to talking and decided we would have to write some music and surf sometime. A few weeks later I got an email from his booking agent. Jordy wanted to take me on tour with him! You have to remember that this was when I had only 3 songs out and no following. Jordy decided to take a chance on this 17 year old surfer who had a big passion for writing music. Now with several tours under our belt as a band, its fun to look back at those first few shows on the road and to see how far we have come, as well as to think of how grateful I am to Jordy Searcy for taking a chance on me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Jettee is a band based out of San Diego, CA that makes what we call “thriftstore indie music”.
Jettee started as my little solo project. I recorded 3 demos in my garage and released them completely independently. The songs gained more recognition than I ever thought they would and I realized that Jettee needed to be a band. We played little local shows for the first year, taking whatever gigs we could and released our first ep “Flying Lessons” in 2023. I still remember booking our first headline show for the ep release. It was at the big venue that I grew up seeing my favorite bands at, and it was absolute insanity to see it packed out for our music.
We are coming up on the release of our sophomore ep “Fault Lines” on January 10th!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Something I am really proud of is the booking of our first headlining tour this summer. We’re actually an indie band, not just in the way that defines our genre, but in a way that means it’s just us running everything. We were all eager to get on the road this last summer and we reached out to some booking agencies. None would take us on, and that makes sense, we’d never done a headlining tour before. I decided, screw it, I’ll book the tour myself. So during my last semester in high school, during my ceramics class, I researched, and sent emails to like a million venues. For every 10 no’s we got, we would get 1 yes and that was good enough for me. By the time the summer came around we had a full headlining tour across many different states as well as festivals and some opening slots for some bigger bands. Now came the time to promote the tour. We had no idea if anyone would show up to our shows. We worked hard promoting and getting the word out and every night a crowd of Jettee fans showed up. The venues all felt packed! I am so grateful for how it worked out and proud of us for pushing open the doorway. In music there is a lot of gatekeepers that decide if you can make music (record labels, agencies, Spotify). I am proud that even when we were the underdogs, we were able to make it happen without the gatekeepers being able to tell us no.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Growing up, I often felt uncertain about where I fit in. Now, through my music, I want to create a place where people know they belong. I want a Jettee show to be a place where anyone can come and cry, laugh, dance, and scream regardless of what they believe, who they are, or what they look like. I want Jettee music to be a place that people belong.
