We recently connected with Sophelia and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, SOPHELIA thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Music has always been a big part of my life. I started playing classical piano at age 4 and one of favorite childhood memories is the many sleepless nights of my mother playing piano outside my bedroom, trying desperately to get me to sleep. Our house was filled with all kinds of music—from The Rolling Stones, Santana to Madonna and ABBA.
The moment that made me realize the power of music was when I saw Rent for the first time. I was in the front row, sitting right next to the speakers, when they started off blasting “Seasons of Love”. What I felt there I had never experience before and it became and obsession, an addiction trying to feel like that agin. I’ve never been an outspoken person, I definitely prefer to listen instead of talking so it’s through music I express myself, my thoughts and feelings.
During my teenage years, I stepped away from music. I didn’t feel good enough or that I had what I took to succeed. Instead, I started exploring theater. After high school, I got a talent based scholarship to a theater school in New York, so I took my stuff and without any friends, family or even a plan not even knowing where I’d live, I moved.
It was during my first year in theater school I meet met my now producer, Rick Steel. He became a great mentor and one of my closest friends to this day. He saw something in me and pushed me to go after music. Even though we come from two diffent worlds, we connected and started making music together. He taught me everything I know and I would not be the one I am today without him.
Now, five years later, I’ve just released my debut single, “Sleepless.” When we wrote the song I was in a really bad place. I was anxious, felt trapped and alone. I still wanted the song to feel positive so it’s meant to be a reminder of the fire within you. I never thought I’d be doing music, especially after choosing a different path, but it just shows that what’s meant for you it’s meant for you. If you really want something, you can make it happen, you just have to trust yourself that you can do it.
SOPHELIA, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Im a singer/ songwriter from Stockholm, Sweden.
In my music I sing unapologetic about heartbreak, love, anxiety, risk and betrayal, about owning yourself, your decisions and trusting that inner voice. I would like to tell the story of a young independent woman going after what she wants and breaking rules fearlessly.
If I had to describe my music I would say, dark, sensual and confidence.
My favorit artist is Amy Winehouse, Fka Twigs and Banks.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Ive always been an overthinker and prefectionist and the biggest lesson I had to learn, is to not be perfect.
Art is nothing you can or should control. Art is there to express, rawness and honesty and theres nothing that destroys art more then trying to control it or overthink it.
Its a lesson that simple but something that I have to continue work on and remind myself of everyday.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
