We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shaun Dull a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shaun, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I was keeping everything low-key and not really putting it out there but I was a dog trainer and working for someone and I just consistently had friends and family reaching out right off a little tips and then all of a sudden people I didn’t know reaching out to me from referrals that I wasn’t even asking for. People were so genuinely happy that their relationship was getting better with their dog. They couldn’t help but tell people and other people one of that same outcome!

Shaun, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always had a passion to work for animals. It was never the big school, but I was going to get a biology degree or another degree along those lines, so I fell into marketing for several years and didn’t like where things were headed and eventually got offered a position at a local doggy daycare that opened up the possibility for me to start to learn about professional dog training, that eventually led to me starting my own business!

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What is the biggest fans that helped me was truly adding value of peoples lives, telling them what they needed to hear not just what they wanted to hear. If you’re not gonna be able to fix something, don’t say you can be honest with people tell the truth actually do what you say you’re gonna do people will notice a little thing.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One thing that really stuck out to me was action, preceded motivation, and if you don’t take action nothing is going to happen
