We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Theresa Cunningham. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Theresa below.
Hi Theresa , thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I’d have to say that any work done for local charities are my most meaningful contributions. I was part of the first Mirci 52 windows silent auction for two years which is a local mental health center that proceeds went to Mirci, Oliver Gospel Mission, and Harvest Hope Food Bank.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always had a lifelong love for art and anything else that is related with being creative. Looking back I would change my perspective on my thought process in the way I approach it. I have a hard time letting go and being loose in my work. At times telling myself to let go and not try to control my thoughts on my work can be limiting and eventually I have to walk away to refresh my thought process. I’m always evolving my work. I love to take courses online it keeps my work fresh. My work consists of realism, abstraction. Depending on my mindset when I start working on a new piece I like to reflect every evening and take notes to ensure it is different than anything else I have put on canvas.
As a recent widow, moving forward in my work is important. Keeping my inspirations alive is the most crucial part of my growth. I used to rely on experiences and emotions to inspire my work. More so now I’ve found music to be an essential tool for me. I love smooth jazz my current favorite is the album “Chet” by Chet Baker it’s soothing and mellow and beautiful.
Art has to be expressively present in my life. It’s the vain of my existence and in many ways my escape and solace from my grief journey of widowhood.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to be more present in my life and my mission is to just be happy with life, my work. To practice humility and patience with my own worst inner critic. To be confident and empowered every day.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
My most rewarding part is doing commissions. I’ve had clients cry or become emotional when they see their painting up close. That means so much to me, knowing the painting I created is exactly what they wanted or more.
I love that every commission is different, with its own backstory. Diving in and exploring their preferred colors and where it will hang in their home helps me get to know my clients.
I enjoy sharing my progress and letting them become part of the painting. Allowing someone to bond with their commission is important to me.
