Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Graham Owerkerk. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Graham, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
Our brand sets a new standard for collaboration in the industry. Our team seamlessly integrates the full spectrum of design and construction services for residential new builds and renovations, prioritizing efficiency, cost control, and quality at every step. Through BuilderTrend, we provide our clients with unparalleled transparency, allowing real-time access to every decision, invoice, adjustment, and progress update. Many clients have shared that, unlike their previous experiences with design-build contractors, they felt fully informed and confident throughout the process—trusting us to deliver on our promises with openness and integrity.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My passion for architecture began on my family farm, where I had endless opportunities to create. With my mom’s refined design eye and my dad’s skill in the trades, I learned the fundamentals of design and construction early on, building everything from gazebos to boardwalks. After high school, my path was clear: I wanted to become an architect.
Today, I offer a full range of architectural services for residential and commercial projects, from design to construction administration, master planning, feasibility studies, and more. As a Certified Passive House Designer and LEED Accredited Professional, I’m deeply committed to sustainable design, which I see as both a passion and a responsibility. I aim to create buildings that are energy-efficient and harmonious with the natural environment—essential for a brighter future for the next generation, including my own three children.
Collaborating with clients to address their unique design challenges, whether optimizing a home, conceptualizing a new custom build, or balancing aesthetics and budget in commercial projects, is the core of my work. My design approach is rooted in environmental contextualization, minimalism, and material purity, ensuring that each project is timeless, sustainable, and seamlessly integrated with its surroundings.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
At Tectonic Design Build, our ethos centers on creating sustainable luxury. We blend environmentally conscious design with refined, timeless aesthetics, allowing our clients to take pride in their spaces—from both an aesthetic standpoint and a commitment to environmental stewardship. Sustainability is woven into every project, offering a sophisticated, eco-conscious experience that truly embodies modern luxury.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Architecture is a dynamic and complex art form, demanding a precise balance of aesthetics and functionality while navigating real-world constraints like building codes, structural considerations, budgets, and more. Unlike any other art form, architecture offers people a daily, immersive interaction, shaping their experience and quality of life. When designing a single-family home, I am creating an environment that will profoundly influence a family’s daily life. In a commercial project, the design may impact countless individuals, affecting how they perceive and interact with their world each day. This dual responsibility and opportunity are what inspire me in every project. With each new design, I aim to create a timeless, sustainable piece of art that elevates both the environment and the user’s experience, whether for a fleeting moment or an entire lifetime.
