We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chassity Felix a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chassity, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
In May 2020, I was going through a rough patch and really needed money to feed my family. At this time I was only baking for my family and a few friends, but I wasn’t charging for my services because the thought of becoming a small business owner was just a dream. I thought owning and operating a bakery would be difficult. Despite these thoughts I quickly pondered to myself, “How can I make extra money?”. After 15 minutes of thinking, I said to myself, “Hey I can sell cookies!”. So I took out my baking tools, ingredients, and made sugar cookies. I immediately posted ” Sugar Cookies Available” on my Instagram and people began to respond. That day I made about $40 which was the perfect amount to make due until my next paycheck. From that day forward, the orders for cookies and cakes began to increase. Within the next month I was able to incorporate my business. I was so shocked and surprised because I started my business during the pandemic and didn’t realize that my dream came true. To my astonisment I was running a small bakery.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well I always loved baking since I was a little girl. I loved watching my Grandma cook and bake so the inspiration came from her. Later on, the inspiration materialized into a new passion for baking. Baking became my art and became my therapy. So I continued to bake until my family and friends suggested I sell my baked goods because I was really good at it. And so I did just that. I came out of my shell and shared my gift with others. This was the best decision I ever made.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn the fear I had of pushing myself. I had to believe and trust that I can do great things in life. When I gave up those negative thoughts I quickly flourished into the person I am today. I used the tools I naturally possess and created beautiful desserts.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
A friend of mine recommended that I use Google as my official website. Utilizing Google to advertise my business for free was the best decision I ever made. Because of my positive ratings on the Google site, my clientele grew tremendously. Every time a potential customer ordered, they always told me that “Because of your reviews, we wanted to order from you”. Hearing this makes me feel really proud and happy because I truly love what I do and it is always an honor to share my baking gift with everyone.
