Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nick Nilsson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nick, appreciate you joining us today. What’s something crazy on unexpected that’s happened to you or your business
When I first started my online business back in 2000, it took me 8 months before I made my first sale. I didn’t have any background in marketing, sales or web design and there weren’t many resources available online back then.
So I had a lot to learn.
Well, one day I decided to offer paid ads in my fitness newsletter to see if anybody would be interested.
And lo and behold, a few days later I got an order for a $7 ad in my newsletter!
I happy very happy…until I looked at the content of the requested ad and saw that it was for a garbage product that I would never want to promote to my audience.
So I refunded the first $7 I made in my business.
And I never looked back! Because even though it was the first money I made online, I wasn’t going to compromise my principles like that…especially right out of the gate!
What it DID do is make me realize that I COULD actually make money online… this was just the beginning.
Nick, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m known in the fitness world as the “Mad Scientist of Muscle” for good reason. For more than 30 years, I’ve been creating unique, new exercises and training techniques and putting together some of the most innovative muscle-building and fat-loss programs available anywhere.
To create these unique programs and exercises, I put to work my degree in Physical Education, covering advanced biomechanics, kinesiology, anatomy and physiology.
I began my training career in high school as a skinny 145 lb cross-country runner, looking to build muscle and get bigger.
These days, I use my experience as a former skinny guy to help others build the bodies of their dreams, whether it be building muscle, losing fat or both. I’ve helped literally thousands of people accomplish their goals and achieve results above and beyond the reach of more traditional programs.
In addition to being published in a variety of magazines (like Ironman, Muscle & Fitness, Maxim) and thousands of training websites across the Internet, Nick is also the author of more than 20 bodybuilding books including: Metabolic Monsters, Muscle Explosion – 28 Days to Maximum Mass, Metabolic Surge – Rapid Fat Loss and The Best Exercises You’ve Never Heard Of series.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I started out my business focusing on online personal training. And I managed to get a number of clients, but I soon came to the realization that in order to really scale up my income, I needed to launch an information product that I could sell multiple times without additional work.
I didn’t want to trade time for money.
That was essentially a massive change in my business goal and focus as I had thought my business was going to be focused on training people.
Once I realized that I needed to make that shift, I focused on writing my first book, “The Best Exercises You’ve Never Heard Of”.
That book was a success and I realized that I did the right thing by completely changing the most major focus of my business.
That was a major business lesson for me. Don’t be married to an idea.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
One thing I pride myself on is always responding personally to customers that have questions about my weight training programs and books.
To me, this is the most important customer interaction there is and I want to let them know that they are supported.
The key thing to getting repeat customers buying from you is for them to know that you are on their side and are ready to help.
This is especially true with fitness information, where oftentimes, people buy a program then don’t actually use it.
I WANT people to use the programs, get results and see how good the programs are. They need to CONSUME the content and put it to work.
That’s how I built my reputation…to this day, I consider my customers extended family. I’ll always look out for them…I’ve had loyal customers and subscribers who have been with me since my first year in business…24 years now!
