We were lucky to catch up with Shaunesty Frederick recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shaunesty, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My most meaningful project would have to be my music yet to be released but All of my music has meaning and substance, Apple tree (my latest release) is similar to a dis track aimed towards the self righteous, those who enjoy calling out others flaws when they are just as imperfect; and my first single was created to be an affirmation to boost any listeners self confidence as they listen to it and sing along. Much like a necessary reminder to always compliment yourself in spite of others opinions, built different is also a think piece that speaks to the issues of cultural appropriation and reminds listeners of my community I.E. the black community, to recognize that others copy you because you are a blue print and it’s out of adoration and even jealousy of you that they do so.

Shaunesty, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been sing since I was 4 years old , so about 22 years now and writing since I was 13. I’m now 26 years old. and for about a year now I’ve been studying the art of production and composition. It was always My goal as an artist to create art of substance that is positive. That speaks truth on my own experience and the experiences of the listener. My mission is to release music that positively impacts and resonates to my listeners experiences and shines a light on the social issues of today. In my craft I feel I have grown quite a bit and as I grow I hope my art and audience grows with me. My inspiration for the type of music I create can be attributed to Artists like India Arie and Laryn Hill . As a once proclaimed neosoul artist now a self proclaimed life music artist pending new releases, I hope to reach and expand to new audiences and teach them the value of positivity and light.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In the beginning of my artist career I admittedly had gone down a very dangerous path. Clubs, drugs and an insatiable appetite for financial gratification. I wanted to be discovered more than I cared about the quality of my message or the quality of my own well being. But that experience molded me into an artist and a woman of strong faith that I have grown up into. Without a test there is no testimony. So though my battles were painful I’m glad to have experienced them.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
That money is more valuable than the quality of your creative works. It is not . Nothing is. Quality over quantity always.
