We recently connected with Andrew Nunes and have shared our conversation below.
Andrew, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned while working at a prior job?
I started in cold calling, sales and customer support and then moved on to human resources and accounting. I had a myriad of jobs throughout my twenties and would not trade that time and experience for anything. Yes, some of those sales jobs were absolutely miserable. Trying to create sales from nothing, cold calling prospective clients who would often hang up on me, and trying to stay positive all the while was huge for my mental health. Those sales jobs taught me no doesn’t always mean no forever, sometimes it is just a slower yes.
Andrew, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
CB Disco made its first sale over three and a half years ago in June of 2021 and since then we have done close to two million dollars in business! CB Disco is a small, local distributor in Massachusetts bringing custom, creative merchandise, apparel, SWAG, and packaging to life for our partners. We started off in the cannabis industry and have since grown to serving construction companies, non-profits, and banks.
We provide thoughtful creative ideas for our partners trying to custom brand items for giveaways, their employees, or handing out at trade shows. Sometimes these items are for resale and other times they are just for branding purposes.
Our partners wear many hats in their roles so the main problem we solve is saving their time doing research for creative merch items. Our 1-on-1 customer service differentiates us from the many online nameless, faceless websites. Our partners know they will always get a resolution if anything goes awry.
I am most proud about starting a business from zero and turning it into a community of partners who are proud to be apart of the Disco Fever Family. It is stressful beyond belief and I am looking forward to continue learning and continuing to be more competitive!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Expecting perfection. Still trying to unlearn this one currently. It comes in waves at times when things aren’t going right. Sometimes, it feels like you can’t get one thing right and the smallest tasks seem so hard. It is hard to see in the moment, but your skin is being thickened. You are being put to the test for a reason. Maybe something bigger is on the horizon and you need to go through these smaller issues to ensure you don’t make a costlier mistake. I am definitely still working on this personally.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Dale Carnegie’s book “How to Win Friends & Influence People” is one of my personal favorites. For an introverted person like myself, this book taught me how to get people to open up to me without saying much. Ask open-ended questions, get someone to talk about themselves, and actually LISTEN to them are the key takeaways. Nobody wants to hear you talk about yourself! This all translates to the philosophical foundation of CB Disco and that is simple- to serve the customer.
