We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lashawna Bennett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lashawna below.
Lashawna, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My name is Lashawna Bennett, but I’m known to many as Lyfe. The most meaningful project I’ve undertaken recently is my album, titled “My Lyfe.” This album holds deep significance for me because I was born into the all-too-common reality of a broken black home. My family grappled with poverty, and my mother struggled with drug addiction during my childhood. As a result, I found myself in the role of caregiver, helping to raise my younger sister while my mother was absent. I often had to stay home and babysit instead of attending school. Growing up in a predominantly Spanish-speaking neighborhood, I faced bullying and didn’t want to go to school even when I could attend. As a plus-sized young woman, the taunts of my peers fueled my insecurities as I grew older.Music became my lifeline, my outlet for expressing the frustrations and pain I carried. The artists I listened to in the 90s spoke to my experiences, helping me navigate my emotions. As I matured, I sought therapy to confront the challenges I’d faced throughout my life.I created this album, “My Lyfe,” to share my story and hopefully offer solace to others who have walked similar paths. Through my music, I hope to help them feel less alone and more understood.

Lashawna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As my passion for music blossomed, I recognized the potential of my talent. But I also understood that succeeding in the music industry required more than just creativity – it demanded a solid understanding of the business side. This realization fueled my decision to pursue a Master’s Degree in Business Management.Armed with my education and entrepreneurial spirit, I founded Life Unlimited Records, a record label dedicated to uplifting artists and spreading positive messages. I also launched Presence of Greatness, a clothing line designed to inspire the younger generation to overcome obstacles and reach their full potential. But I wanted to do more than just create music and apparel – I wanted to be a daily source of motivation for others. That’s why I commit to posting inspirational videos on social media every day. My goal is to provide the words of encouragement people need to tackle challenges head-on and keep moving forward.Through my music, my labels, and my online presence, I’m building a brand centered around empowerment and resilience. I believe that no matter what life throws our way, we all have the capacity to rise above and achieve greatness. And I’m dedicated to helping others unlock that potential within themselves.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
If I could go back in time, I’d teach my younger self about the power of financial literacy. Growing up, I didn’t grasp the importance of building credit, saving, and making smart money moves. But as I navigated the music industry, I learned that financial stability is key to investing in your own success. In an ideal world, talent alone would be enough to propel a music career forward. But the reality is that marketing and advertising require a budget. And without a financial safety net, it’s tough to take the risks necessary to truly get your music out there. When I was starting out, getting signed to a record label seemed like the holy grail. I thought they’d provide the funds and support I needed to make it big. But I quickly realized I didn’t fit the mold of the artists labels typically backed. Now, I’m taking control of my financial education and investing in myself. It’s not always easy, but I know that being financially savvy is crucial to building a sustainable music career on my own terms.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My heart’s deepest desire is to make a positive difference in this world. I yearn to be a vessel for God’s love, spreading joy and uplifting others during these challenging times. It feels like darkness and hatred are all too prevalent, but I believe we all deserve to experience love, compassion, and light. The world is hungry for kindness and genuine connection. We’re all struggling through our own battles, and sometimes a simple act of love or a reminder of our worth can be the turning point. That’s why I’m so passionate about sharing messages of hope and resilience through my music and my presence online.I want to be a beacon of light in the darkness, a reminder that we are never alone and that better days are ahead. I want my life’s work to inspire others to hold onto faith, to keep pushing forward even when the road gets tough, and to always remember their inherent value. In a world that can sometimes feel overwhelmingly negative, I’m committed to being a force for good. I’m just one person, but I believe that with God’s guidance, we can all make a meaningful difference and help heal the hurts of those around us.
