We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Neo Ernest Seekoei a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Neo Ernest, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
The moment I received my first $50 check from streaming platforms felt surreal, like stepping into a new world where my passion could turn into something tangible. It all started with a song I had poured my heart into, a track that felt like a piece of me. I spent countless nights in my small bedroom studio, layering melodies and fine-tuning every beat.
After releasing the song, I was anxious but hopeful. I shared it on social media, reaching out to friends and family, and slowly, it began to gain traction. I remember the thrill of seeing the play counts rise, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. Each new listener felt like a vote of confidence, a sign that my art was resonating with someone out there.
Then came the day I opened my email to find a notification from the streaming platform. I had generated revenue! I couldn’t believe it. That $50 check represented more than just a monetary value; it was validation of my journey as an independent artist. I felt a rush of pride and excitement, knowing that someone out there had connected with my music enough to listen and support me.
I celebrated that moment with friends, sharing the news and the check. It was a small amount, but it was the first step in what I hoped would be a long and fulfilling career. That check became a symbol of possibility, a reminder that with passion and dedication, my dreams could turn into reality. It felt like the universe was whispering that I was on the right path, and I couldn’t wait to see where it would lead me next.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Ne-Oh, an independent musical artist hailing from Pampierstad, a small but vibrant hood in the Northern Cape of South Africa. Growing up in an environment where danger and struggle were part of daily life, music became my refuge and my way of expressing the raw emotions and stories that surrounded me. I turned to hip-hop and rap as my primary forms of expression, using the beats and lyrics to speak about my experiences and the realities of life in my community.
I got into music as a teenager, inspired by local artists and the universal language of rhythm and rhyme. I started writing lyrics as a way to cope with my surroundings, and soon enough, I found myself creating songs that resonated with not just my life but the lives of those around me. My music is a blend of hip-hop beats infused with local sounds, creating a unique style that reflects my roots.
What sets me apart from others is my authenticity. I don’t shy away from the harsh truths of life; instead, I embrace them and weave them into my music. I aim to connect with listeners on a deeper level, offering them a sense of understanding and solidarity. My work addresses issues such as poverty, violence, and hope, providing a voice for those who often feel unheard. I want my songs to inspire others to rise above their circumstances and pursue their dreams, no matter how daunting the journey may seem.
I’m most proud of my ability to create music that resonates with people from all walks of life. It’s incredibly fulfilling to hear feedback from fans who relate to my lyrics, knowing that my experiences can touch someone else’s heart. My ultimate goal is to build a community around my music, where we can uplift and support one another.
To potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that my brand is rooted in resilience and authenticity. My music is a reflection of my journey and the stories of my community, and I hope it can inspire others to embrace their own paths. I’m dedicated to growing as an artist and using my platform to spark conversations about the issues that matter.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One story that truly illustrates my resilience as Ne-Oh, an independent artist from Pampierstad, comes from a time when I was ready to give up on my music. It was during a particularly tough period in my life, where the struggles of my environment felt overwhelming. The violence and challenges around me were taking a toll, and I found myself questioning whether pursuing my passion was worth it.
I had just finished a new track that I believed in, pouring my heart and soul into it. But when I released it, the response was underwhelming. I didn’t see the plays I had hoped for, and my confidence took a hit. I felt disheartened, doubting my talent and wondering if I should just walk away from music altogether.
One night, after a long day filled with negativity, I decided to take a walk through my neighborhood to clear my mind. As I walked, I passed by a group of kids who were playing and rapping on the street corner. They didn’t have much, but their smiles and laughter reminded me of why I started making music in the first place. I could see how much joy it brought them, even in the toughest of circumstances.
In that moment, I realized that my music wasn’t just about me; it was about connecting with others, sharing stories, and offering hope. It reignited a fire in me. I went home and wrote a new verse that night, inspired by what I had witnessed. I decided to share my struggles and the journey I was on, embracing vulnerability as a strength.
When I released that new track, it resonated with my audience in a way I hadn’t expected. People began reaching out, sharing their own stories, and showing support. That experience taught me that resilience isn’t just about pushing through; it’s about finding strength in vulnerability and using my voice to uplift others.
From that point on, I embraced my journey, knowing that every setback was just a setup for a comeback. I learned that my music could be a source of inspiration, not just for myself but for my community. It reinforced my belief that as long as I stayed true to my story and my passion, I could overcome any obstacle.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Man, if I could rewind and tap into some resources earlier in my creative journey, I’d definitely say the power of online courses and platforms that connect artists would have been a game-changer. There’s a wealth of knowledge out there—like workshops and tutorials that break down the artistry behind music production and songwriting. Plus, discovering the right communities to share ideas and collaborate would have opened doors to fresh perspectives and inspiration. I wish I had dived into podcasts that explore creativity and the journeys of other artists sooner; they can really light that fire and motivate you to push boundaries. Embracing these tools earlier would have supercharged my growth and helped refine my craft even faster!
