We were lucky to catch up with Scott Kulman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Scott , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so one thing we think people don’t talk about nearly enough is investments – either time or money. What’s one of the best or worst investments you’ve made and what did you learned from the experience?
People often ask, “What’s the best investment you’ve made in SpeechLess Music?” If you’d asked me that at the start, I might’ve talked about sound systems or maybe some flashy ad campaign. But looking back, it’s clear—the best investment was in our people, both on the musician side and in the office team. Hands down.
From day one, I knew I wanted a team that didn’t just clock in and out but one that showed up ready to build something with real heart. I was looking for self-starters, the kind of people who’d see a challenge and think, “Alright, let’s tackle it.” Organized folks with excitement to match. That mix—of grit and genuine buy-in—has become the backbone of SpeechLess.
It’s this attitude that’s defined our brand. Each member’s not just part of the team; they’re part of the story we’re building here. They’re in on the ground floor, shaping the way SpeechLess Music sounds, looks, and operates. When clients hire us, they’re not getting some cookie-cutter band—they’re getting a team that’s 100% in sync and ready to make something memorable.
We run SpeechLess as a meritocracy. Ideas are king here, no matter if they’re coming from someone who has been with us for a decade or joined last week. The best ideas come from all corners of the team, and it’s often the fresh eyes that spot something new. We don’t have room for ego, only for what will take us to the next level.
A while back, we had this massive corporate gig, and one of our newer team members threw out a setup idea that was way off from what we usually do. I was skeptical—but then I saw the mockup. The client loved it, and the crowd loved it more. That’s the kind of thing we live for—letting creativity come through from every angle and making sure everyone feels like their input has weight.
We sponsor all kinds of professional events, workshops, and meetups so our people can get immersed in the industry. Live events are an evolving beast, and the more exposure our crew has, the more they bring back to us.
A lot of folks on our team have hit up industry conventions, sound design workshops, you name it. They come back fired up with fresh ideas, connections, and insights that help us stay sharp. When they grow, SpeechLess grows.
There’s a chemistry in our team that people notice. We’ve got a mix of seriousness and ease that clients seem to vibe with, and it shows up in the feedback. Whether we’re on stage in Miami or setting up in some New England barn, clients see our focus and feel our energy. That kind of culture doesn’t just happen—it’s a product of the respect, trust, and drive we’ve built within our crew.
If there’s any advice I’d give to boutique companies like ours, it’s this: forget the “brand” until you’ve got the right people. The right team is the brand.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
In 2011, SpeechLess Music started as a funky instrumental side project focused on music that needs no words and melodies that sing without vocals. Performing nationwide, our continued dedication to musical excellence and five-star service has shaped our organization into the boutique entertainment group that it is today. Whether you need a jazz ensemble for your holiday party, strings for your wedding ceremony, or a high energy band and DJ for your reception, SpeechLess has you covered.
I was performing in a bunch of other groups that I felt were mismanaged and I thought I could do things better. Oftentimes the ownership/management either weren’t top-tier musicians or they were unorganized or both! I learned that their job wasn’t as easy as I thought but I also feel confident saying that I have succeeded in doing things better!
I would say that we collectively here at SpeechLess Music are event producers. We’re not an agency because we are all professional, performing musicians ourselves. But we’re quite a bit more than “just players,” because of all the coordination and logistics that go into what we do.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele at SpeechLess Music has been nurturing relationships within our network. Building strong connections with event coordinators, venue managers, and industry contacts has proven invaluable—not only do these partnerships keep us top of mind for upcoming events, but they also lead to trusted referrals and repeat bookings. We invest time in genuinely understanding the needs and preferences of these collaborators, which has created a solid network that consistently brings us new opportunities. For us, these relationships are more than just business; they’re the foundation of our reputation and growth.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What’s strengthened our position in the market more than anything else is our commitment to delivering an exceptional product, backed by a dedication to customer service. We focus not only on putting on an unforgettable performance but on being partners in the planning process. From the first conversation to the final encore, we’re there for our clients, helping them shape the vision of their event and adapt to any changes along the way. This level of involvement shows our clients they’re in good hands, which builds trust, loyalty, and a reputation that continues to strengthen our market presence.
