We were lucky to catch up with Sophie Furman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sophie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
One of the kindest things that anyone’s ever done for me is the amount of friends and fellow friendly colleagues that I’ve made over the years in the creative industry. Everyone is so eager to help, and has loads of advice not only about illustration but about life things in general. I honestly don’t know where I’d be without this thriving community around me!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an illustrator who lives and draws in Brooklyn, NY and works for children’s books, editorial, and businesses. I do everything from book illustrations, to magazine comics, and to start-ups and nonprofits. I bring a little spark and magic to any brand or writing in a visual way.
I create happy illustrations that I hope help make the world a better place!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Having grown up as a low-income immigrant, I strive to help people, especially in the field of hunger justice, amongst other causes! My goal is to help as many kids (in children’s book illustration) and people through my illustrations!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I am definitely a big fan of continuing to learn in all things illustration, and a resource that I wish I knew about earlier in my career is Domestika, which has so many cool courses and such. They have everything from children’s book illustration to surface design courses!
