We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Courtney Phenicie. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Courtney below.
Alright, Courtney thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
CincyMusic was built with the local music community in mind. Our city is full of vibrant talent, and our job is to spread the word about that. Every day, there are concerts worth attending (both local and national). CincyMusic is all about connecting those events with music fans. We feature accurate concert listings, local band profiles, music news, and resources to help guide musicians through the beginning stages of their careers.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My brothers Ian Bolender, Nathan Bolender, and I founded CincyMusic in 2011. We all have a love of music and our city, and we saw the void in a resource for music fans and musicians alike. Each of us has a very different skill set. Ian with purchasing, promoting, and producing live events (as well as being in local bands himself), and Nathan as a full-stack web & mobile developer. And myself as a writer and in public relations.
CincyMusic provides a resource for music fans to discover new music, concert listings, and music news, reviews, and photos. Local band profiles allow artists to create a band page for themselves to promote themselves and upcoming shows. Talent Buyers and Promoters can search band profiles to find bands to book shows with.
CincyMusic also assists organizations and venues with booking bands. I really enjoy and take pride in booking bands for events. I feel like I have a leg up as I stay up to date on the local scene and have positive working relationships with many local musicians.
CincyMusic is also the passion project of our larger organization Patchboard. Patchboard builds websites & apps for venues, sports teams, and music festivals. We are able to focus on CincyMusic’s impact on the community without being concerned with monetizing the site.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect is seeing musicians on stage and watching the crowd fall in love with them. Knowing that I had a small part in getting people out to a show by previewing the show, interviewing a band, or booking the artists makes me very happy.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Being a woman in the music industry has its battles, just as in other sectors. Being mansplained to, talked down to, or people assuming I don’t have time to do certain things because I have a child. Luckily, I am confident that I am very good at what I do and I can hold my own,
I have also learned not to take things personally. When we are denied a photo pass for a certain show or an interview with an artist – it never or rarely has anything to do with CincyMusic or me. Everyone is busy and trying their best with what they can handle.
