We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marco Tornillo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marco below.
Marco, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I had a solid job as a commercial mixer in advertising but it wasn’t fulfilling enough financially and creatively. There were certainly moments that sparked creative insights but I knew I wanted to make a change and work on music full time. I was working so many hours at the studio mixing commercials that I was drained to make music on the same program at home in the evenings. My work was taking away my creative thinking and most importantly, time. I had a tough decision of quitting my steady job to pursue music full time, or to at least give myself new opportunities in my music career, but I did so and was so happy with the decision.
This risk opened up new avenues for me. Firstly, I had to continue to pay rent and bills and food so I had to earn every dollar and make it last, but it drove me to be business oriented and make smarter financial decisions. Secondly, it freed up time during the day so I could attend more sessions, meetings, and focus on my health with better eating habits and exercise. Lastly, this risk showed me that the only obstacle in my way of following my dreams was the fear of failure. Failure to make incredible music and failure to provide for myself and the others around me. Once you dive off the cliff there’s only one way to go – all in.

Marco, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started playing guitar when I was 8 years old because I wanted to learn Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day. This was the start of my musical journey as a guitarist, then later to bass and drums. I have always played in bands growing up and love a good jam session, but it was in college that I started production using computer software. This sparked my interest in making full musical productions on my laptop. I’m not much of a singer so I soon turned to friends to sing/rap on my productions. During college I got an internship at Eleven Sound, a boutique audio post-production studio in Santa Monica, CA, which is where I learned all my Pro Tools and computer skills. I continued to produce music during the nights to eventually quitting my job at the studio and working on my own material.
I am currently working with a few regular artists to help them further their sonic image and grow musically as artists. I engineer and record my artists, and typically mix as well.
I provide a comfortable studio space that allows the artist to be free and in the moment to create the best experience musically and emotionally.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I am happy that I can share the things I love with other creatives and fans. It’s always rewarding when a friend likes the music or content but it’s especially satisfying when a random stranger knows the music and appreciates it.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I just want to make the most timeless music with my friends and have a great time in the process.
