We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charles Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Charles, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
The biggest challenge in our industry for profitability are clients believability that our services will give the R.O.I. (return of investment) desired. A company without marketing is like someone blowing a kiss to someone they like in the dark. The product is there but the target audience does not see it. A client that believes the money spent on marketing will give them more money than they spend, would definitely spend more on marketing. The more believable the marketing proposal the more money a client will spend with our company.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My career started over 25 years ago as a direct marketer for a vacuum cleaner company and let’s just say I sucked. I later received direct marketing training from a corporate perspective in 2000, where I constantly heard from the public that I should be on the radio. I was told I have a perfect voice for radio and should do voiceovers as well. It was not until 2017, I did my first live broadcast on social media and the public instantly responded with when will the next broadcast be available. In the beginning it was a lot of work with little to no pay assignments. It was all about helping people know about what they needed to know from free services for the homeless, PSAs, real estate investing, life insurance, events, artists and especially restaurants. As of today, my company has helped thousands of people, in over 17 different countries, know about what they need to know. Our radio show is one of the top 5 on our station and looking for sponsorship that would add to our brand.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My reputation has been built on providing real facts, reliable, researchable with my honest opinions and a touch of humor. My extroverted personality being friendly, respectful and eager to learn about new things keeps me wanting to meet new people and help them achieve their dreams. I have learned if I help enough other people achieve what they want, I will get what I want.
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
When I began direct marketing for a corporation that was opening a new region, where I was unfamiliar with the area but required to build a sales team and produce profit within 30 days. There were many doubts that I would be successful but I remembered a time where people bought pet rocks. Anything can be sold as long as you get it marketed correctly to the right people. Long story short, within 9 months, our region had surpassed expectations and was the number one region in the United States. The success of that region led to my promotion, opening my own marketing company and responsible for my belief that there is a market for almost anything.
