Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kate Segal. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kate, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I have been making digital art since I was a child however, I starting formally selling my art in 2020 after the COVID 19 pandemic began. I created a website and opened an online store at that time. In addition to being an artist, I am also a licensed clinical psychologist, I was in my final year of training before receiving my doctorate when the pandemic hit and as the potential of being an in-person front line worker in a hospital was becoming a reality in addition to coping with the sudden realization of a pandemic as a new mother at the time, I was stressed. To manage my stress, I began to create a lot more digital art. More people took interest of the art I was posting on social media as I was showing more art to the world via that, which made me, for the first time say “why not open a online store?” So I did. Since then my business has organically grown. I have sold my artwork directly to customers and also licensed my artwork to major companies like Trader Joes and HBO.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have created digital art recreationally since I was a child. First using older computer paint programs such as microsoft paint and kidpix (shout out to my 90’s computer software) and over time I started creating art using what i use now in the Procreate app. I am mostly self-taught. I entered the industry when I started to sell my artwork online in 2020. Companies, magazines, and customers started scouting me for direct art sales, magazine spreads, as well as licensing deals. My art has been featured on greeting cards, book covers, puzzles, musical EP and LP records, fabric, beer cans, and clothing, as well on TV shows like HBO’s Succession. My art incorporates a signature use of uplifting and bold colors and is embedded with themes of nature, spirituality, and an emphasis on the female experience. I love working with clients to commission their desired piece via the channel of my artist style. It’s so fun! I am super collaborative.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I create art to calm my nervous system and feel connected to peace. My mission is to spread that vibration of peace and calm via my art to as many people as possible on earth.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I grew up and still live in Manhattan NYC. I have been going to museums and seeing fine art since I was a child. Being a digital artist, I had to unlearn that digital art is not a valuable, meaningful form of artwork. I’m glad I unlearned that over the years.
