We recently connected with Lj Felix and have shared our conversation below.
LJ, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
Everything starts with passion. The things that actually move you without even knowing. Even since I was a child I’ve always liked looking outdoors, seeing different things that really caught my eye. I’ve had the response in my head that whatever I look at, has an untold story (And I would make up a story in my head. I was a kid back then). Growing up the one thing that I was passionate about, was a camera. Every picture I take has a story or can even be an imaginary story, they do say a picture is worth a thousand words. But beyond photos – I’ve gotten into videography. Video and Photo are mechanically the same but treat the viewer differently. Video can do a lot of things that can move you. Depending on what you watch, can either make you feel happy, sad, angry, or even hungry. Photos are something that you can take creatively with imagination. Videos are something that you can take creatively with mutual understanding or reciprocal. I’ve had this idea to somehow try to make the two in one. A YouTube channel that I created @ljfelix. Starting a YouTube channel is tough at first. But I never thought about getting monetized or getting brand deals, etc. I just created videos for what I thought for myself that would be helpful, not for others. And I just kept on doing that. Eventually – I was getting views because there are people that have similar interests as I do. You get to build a community which I think is pretty cool and I’ve never expected that. All I did for my very first video was that I was doing it for me and I just hit that red REC button on top of the camera.

LJ, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
LJ FELIX | Freelance Videographer. I’m no professional but I do have the heart of being one. I’m just a regular person with the eye to tell stories with content creation. I pretty much go around the wheel for me to push myself on the creative side. Sometimes daily work can get you worked up. But sometimes giving a moment to yourself, a thought will appear and the execution is always too challenging when you have so much to do as a responsible adult. But once I’m in the zone, I’m locked in. I’ve been a wedding videographer for quite some time now, such beautiful weddings that are meant to be kept. I’ve worked with many technology companies like Zhiyun, Ulanzi, Neewer, electric bikes, and electric skateboard companies. I’ve had a sweet tooth when it comes to fun gadgets. I work with content creation on a hat company called Alter Ego Running as well as a local gym (B.E.A.S.T. Performance) for workout content to help promote the business. Every content that I make is what I’m proud of. The whole process and procedure of making content make me excited, sometimes things can get overwhelming, but once you get the hang of it and learn how to optimize, and organize your work you will feel re-lived.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Sometimes all of the videography journey can be tough. No one will ever be ready for what they’re supposed to do or even be ready for. “ANYTHING” can happen a different way. Even the most organized person will have to make shifts. The most important thing to endure is to be flexible and improvise. I recently had a video shoot for an event that was scheduled months before. As the date came near. A new firmware update was available for my Sony FX3, attempted the update, a few moments later. The update was unsuccessful and my camera would keep on rebooting. It was really unfortunate because my camera was working fine aside from this update that was initiated. Called up Sony and they could not find a fix for it and told me to bring it in for repair. Knowing that I do have a video shoot coming up, I did not know what to do. So I had to improvise and be flexible, thinking outside of the box and using what I had. My cellphone, GoPro, a drone, and a 360 camera was what I had with external microphones. So I’ve adjusted to that and set everything back to where I was 5 years ago. For you to know, the event went successful with pretty damn good content. Sometimes we will get setbacks with surprised attacks with whatever will happen. But we can’t let that bring us down. Be flexible and improvise.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
This is a tricky one. Being creative is a journey like riding a roller coaster. A person who has a fear of heights. Walking to the line – waiting for the moment – getting up to the roller coaster – watching the coaster climb as you sit down in fear – as the time you hit the peak is when your heart stops – feeling the gush of air as you drop in full speed – doing your best to relax and have fun with it. Everything about being creative is always an UP and DOWN moment. No matter what genre of being creative you’re at. But one thing is for sure is that you have to enjoy every UP and DOWN moment as you can. As for me being a videographer: A wedding is coming up for a video shoot (nervous). Thinks about the plan on what kind of video to make (excited). Gathering the gear that’s needed, sometimes it’s best to bring less gear (nervous). Recording everything that’s needed in the event (excited). Finished the event. “Did I record everything that I need?” (nervous). Client would like to see the results (nervous). Editing everything in my power with minimal distractions (excited, in the zone.) Would this be the final result? Submits to client (nervous). Client was very pleased with the video with tears of joy (happy with the most rewarding feeling).
