We were lucky to catch up with T. Sasha Phillip recently and have shared our conversation below.
T. Sasha , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I definitely wish I had the confidence to start sooner. I was always the creative individual I am today, but the confidence took time. I started creating when I was about 10 years old. I would use those “how to” drawing books from the library to practice. I fell in love with the visuals from the Disney animation of Hercules. The five goddesses were so beautiful to me. I used to hang my completed drawings on the hallway walls of the house; it was my gallery. I was very shy about sharing my art because I did not understand critique and the conversation that happens around art. I would have definitely changed that about myself. If I could go back, I would challenge and push myself to share my art and make connections to further my then budding artist career. After years of hiding my art work I began to identify as an artist in high school. My high school art teacher encouraged me to enter my artwork into a county wide art competition. I won and have been on this creative journey ever since.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Creating has been my passion since I can remember. I come from a family of creators. My Caribbean parents have influenced my love for color, crafting, and creating! I obtained my Bachelors degree in studio art from Clark Atlanta University. Soon after, I obtained my MBA. After teaching art for many years at the high school level I decided to take a leap out on faith. I am currently pursing an DBA. I use many different mediums, I use whatever I am drawn to in the moment of creating. I believe that working in a single medium is restrictive to my artistic process. Each idea manifests in its own individual style.
I enjoy family and travel in my spare time and many of my pieces are directly influenced by nature, music, my culture, and my love of figure and the female form.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I enjoy creating! I love being able to think about an idea and actually seeing it come to life. I also enjoy assisting others with the same process. Whether it is creating for someones home, creating a portrait, or executing a design, I truly enjoy the creative process. Making things, beautiful and unique things is what I do and love.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I am driven by the passion of creating. I want to show others that there is a journey to the passion to profit process. I am also driven now by my eldest son, Major. He is an artist. He is so talented and I want him to show him where his passion and talents can take him.
