We were lucky to catch up with Marisa Barrett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marisa, thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Risk. It’s just a scary word isn’t it? I prefer to say taking a Leap of Faith. I feel like I have spent a lot of my life taking little leaps of faith and some bigger leaps of Faith.
One of the big leaps would have been when I moved to Colorado. I was living in Las Vegas and was a single mom with two boys..
I moved on complete faith to Colorado after being here for a weekend to pick up my son from his Dad.
A week later I was on my way back with my two kids, two small dogs and a car full of stuff! I had a small plan but wasn’t sure what would happen next.
I got my kids registered for football and school and started looking for jobs. With my LARGE faith, I prayed for direction and clarity. I knew what was planned for me, just needed to patient.
Little did I know, one of my boys would change my life with being on the football team he was registered for.
Fast forward, his football coach became my husband, we had a daughter and De’Lylahs Hair & Body was created. Because of my leap of Faith!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always wanted to do hair! I liked making people feel good! So when I graduated high school I went to nursing school and worked as a nurse for a couple years. After that I tried massage therapy and when 2008/ 2009 resession hit I had to go back to nursing.
again, after a couple years in nursing, I still found myself looking for more! So I took a leap of faith and went to hair school and never looked back! Since being in the industry, I am able to help people look good and feel good every day!
Since being in the industry, I have spent most of my career, dedicated to perfecting blondes and extensions!
At De’Lylahs, we focus on color and extensions however, we offer other services as well. :-)
One of the things that I think our Salon differs from most, is we provide a luxury service with a comfortability of hanging out with your best girlfriends! I always wanted to create a space that was safe and inviting for our clients.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
I think building the perfect team isn’t something that is done overnight. I believe building a perfect team takes patience and grace.
I think in order to have the best team, I think it also takes some humility. Treating your team as though they are important and valued is something that gets missed these days. Especially in the day-to-day. I think appreciation daily goes along way and telling your team that you are proud of them and they are doing a good job is key!

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I think the best source of new clients for us has been word-of-mouth and Facebook groups! While, some social media is great our salon has really been built on our reputation and word of mouth. We find we have a lot of moms and business women who frequent our salon.
No matter where we get clients, we are ever grateful for them!
