We recently connected with Katrina Lowe and have shared our conversation below.
Katrina, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
I try to show customers that I appreciate them is by giving them the time and space to feel like they are a part of the creative process, and that they truly have a say in how we proceed with making their tattoo. I always make sure to take time to make the customer comfortable in the studio before we begin, and I give them space to be alone with the design I’ve created for them so they can give me any notes or comments about anything we would need to change. I think it’s important to make the customer comfortable with you mentally, because getting a tattoo is so uncomfortable physically.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a lifelong artist! I started painting alone in my bedroom at the age of 7, and I never stopped. I always used painting as a form of art therapy for myself and I believe art should be accessible for everyone. I have always loved tattoos although I felt as though my style of abstract art didn’t quite fit in with most of the tattoos I saw in America, but once I saw some of the newer types of tattoos coming out of Europe, I feel more emboldened to begin a tattoo career.
The paintings I sell are generally abstract, minimalist designs on paper or canvas, which aligns with most of the tattoos I make. I am also interested in black work tattoo, and I do a lot of dark botanicals or what I call “shadow plant” designs.
Most of the problems I solve for my clients are about helping them to realize their own artistic vision, and shaping that into something that can be a lasting tattoo design. Not everything can instantly be a tattoo, and it takes a knowledge of how a tattoo will age as well as a knowledge of the body to make the necessary changes before something becomes a tattoo.
I am proud of my ability to think outside the box when it comes to tattoo design, and being honest with myself about the art I truly want to create. I would love for people to see me as a kind and compassionate human artist, who will take you seriously and help you achieve the tattoo of your dreams.

Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
To be frank, I miss payroll all the time. As a sole proprietor I am my only employee, and in the tattoo industry, busy times come and go, so you have to be prepared for a downturn in business anytime, and make sure you are saving what you can for when that happens

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to create and share with others is hugely rewarding, and it helps me feel like we are all part of the same human family. I love meeting all types of new people and getting to spend time with them, learning about their lives, and then taking ideas and bringing them to life.
