We recently connected with Holly Szamrej and have shared our conversation below.
Holly, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’re complete cheeseballs and so we love asking folks to share the most heartwarming moment from their career – do you have a touching moment you can share with us?
I have been a bedside nurse for 21 years. Over the course of that, there have been several moments that have captured my heart. I had the privilege of being a labor and delivery nurse for 16 years. I have watched grown men sob at the birth of their baby. I have witnessed mamas laboring for hours demonstrating strength like no other. I have watched mamas of mamas break down at the beauty of watching their baby have a baby. I have stayed late and come in on days off because of the trusting relationship I’ve built with patients.
My career in aesthetics hasn’t been much different. I have had women in my chair that just survived breast cancer. I have sat at the bedside with them after a divorce. I have shared the struggle of your first moving out for college. I have followed their kids’ journeys. I have had patients moved to tears after the treatment I gave them. I have been blessed to share life, laughter and tears with so many over the years.
Holly, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For those readers that didn’t see the last article in Voyage magazine a few months ago, I was a labor and delivery nurse for 16 years before I decided to transition into aesthetics and wellness. I am also a certified personal trainer and currently taking classes for nutrition certification. I am passionate about educating and helping my patients not only through aesthetic treatments, but also with nutrition and mental wellness.
I was hired by a prominent surgical center in Grand Rapids, MI upon deciding to leave the hospital. I was able to get the best training and learn from so many different trainers while I was there. I have such an attention to detail, and I love the reactions and happy tears after the treatment .
I was presented with the opportunity to purchase Pure Beauty, and I jumped at the chance to be my own boss and create a warm and welcoming experience. Pure Beauty currently offers Velashape, infrared sauna, mineral body wraps and facials.
What sets me apart from other businesses in this field is my experience at the bedside and my own journey with aesthetics and wellness. I have the ability to relate to my patients and have empathy to what they are going through and what their goals are.
I am most proud of the reviews and messages I receive from my patients loving their results. Giving someone the gift of confidence reinforces my passion and love for what I do.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I had to go back, there is no other profession I would choose other than being a Registered Nurse. I feel like God put me on this earth to make a difference and this profession has allowed me to change the life of so many people. Whether it was during the years of labor and delivery or being a nurse injector, the moments of gratitude remind me how blessed I am to do what I love. Women have recognized me at the grocery store and come hug me and thank me for being there at the most vulnerable time. Patients have looked in the mirror after treatment and have had tears of joy.
I really can’t imagine anything more rewarding. This field has allowed me to make a difference in the lives of so many. I am humbled and beyond grateful for all of the highs and lows in the past 21 years.
Let’s move on to buying businesses – can you talk to us about your experience with business acquisitions?
Pure Beauty Aesthetics and Wellness is the first business I have experience in purchasing. The acquisition process was fairly easy with the seller. We had a legal purchase agreement in place.
My advice to someone that is thinking about purchasing a business is to have access to a reliable accountant, lawyer, and someone who is good at technology. There is always going to be something that comes up in the process. There will always be hurdles. There will always be questions. Remember your WHY! Reach out to other business owners and join groups. Seek assistance with social media and marketing. Delegate the tasks you can. Keep going!
