Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tanae James. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tanae, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Throughout my career, I’ve worked on many projects that are dear to my heart, but I’m currently involved in one that may be the most meaningful yet. My goal has always been to promote inclusivity and create a safe space in the beauty industry for people of color.
I am launching a blog called “The Beauty Breakthrough,” which will highlight the experiences of Black and POC women in beauty. In this space, I’ll delve into the complexities of building a brand while embracing individualism, overcoming imposter syndrome, and celebrating the multifaceted lives we lead.
Through my journey, I’ll explore authentic friendships, relationships, and the importance of prioritizing health and wellness. My aim is to inspire readers to embrace their true selves and break free from societal norms. This project is meaningful to me because it combines my passion for beauty with my commitment to empowerment and representation.
Tanae, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m passionate about fostering inclusivity in the beauty industry, particularly for people of color. My journey began with a desire to address the lack of representation and support for diverse voices in beauty. After years of navigating the industry and experiencing its challenges firsthand, I decided to create a platform that champions these experiences.
What sets me apart is my commitment to creating a safe space where readers can connect, reflect, and celebrate their unique journeys. I believe in the power of storytelling and empowerment, and I strive to inspire my audience to embrace their true selves.
I’m most proud of the community we’re building around shared experiences and support. My main goal is to ensure that everyone feels seen and valued in the beauty space. I want potential clients and followers to know that my work is dedicated to uplifting voices that have historically been marginalized and to inspiring confidence and authenticity in all who visit my platform.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a makeup artist is the ability to transform not just appearances but also confidence. Seeing someone light up when they look in the mirror after I’ve worked on them is incredibly fulfilling. It’s about more than just makeup; it’s about helping people feel their best, express themselves, and embrace their unique beauty. Building connections with clients and being a part of their special moments—whether it’s a wedding, photoshoot, or just a night out—makes every brushstroke meaningful.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Absolutely! Early in my journey as a makeup artist and business owner, I faced significant challenges that tested my resilience. One of the toughest moments was when I first launched my brand. I had invested everything I had into it, but early on, I struggled to gain traction and visibility in a competitive industry.
I remember one particular huge event where I had planned to showcase my work, but a last-minute cancellation left me feeling defeated. Instead of giving up, I decided to pivot. I reached out to business friends and local influencers, inviting them for a pop-up session. I transformed my space into a mini studio, where we created looks and shared them on social media.
The response was overwhelming! People loved the experience, and my work started to gain recognition. That moment taught me that setbacks can be stepping stones. As a Black woman in beauty, it also reinforced the importance of community and collaboration. Now, I focus not just on my artistry but also on uplifting others in the industry, fostering a supportive environment where we can all thrive. Resilience is about adapting and finding strength in challenges, and that experience truly shaped my journey.
