We recently connected with Vapid Haus and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Vapid, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Vapid Haus began at the University of Colorado Denver through the founding of the university’s first student-led radio station, Denver Lynx Radio. The Vapid Haus team met through the music business program, and noticed a gaping hole in the campus’ music community – a radio station. As a primarily commuter campus, CU Denver students often find it a bit more challenging to find community than one might at a traditional campus. We owe our college radio pursuits for bringing us together. As the team nears graduation, we noticed that the need for community in the Denver’s music scene extends past university campuses. Plenty of people come from out of state, taking the leap and moving to Denver to pursue their craft. The city is busting at the seams with creatives searching for community. At Vapid Haus, we leverage our college radio experience and connections to bring together listeners, musicians, and industry resources through multimedia promotions. The music industry can be an intimidating space to break into, being notoriously competitive and often lonely; we are a one stop shop for those at any stage of their journey into the industry. This mission has created space for us to craft a strong web of other creatives through a mutual passion for music, and it is important to us to spread that space throughout Denver and, eventually, beyond.
Vapid, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Our team came together through a mutual interest in the logistics of the music industry. While we are not musicians ourselves, we are avid music lovers and listeners. Vapid Haus aims to support the pursuits of the awe inspiring musicians around us. Through concert and portrait photography, interviews, playlists, show promotions, and more, we introduce listeners to musicians. Vapid Haus is a space for all music lovers, listeners, and performers to go for resources that connect them to Denver’s music scene. Our “In Your Element” series, interviewing local musicians, really celebrates the talent in Denver, and is a great place to start when entering Vapid Haus for the first time. We are proud of the music community here in Colorado, and we want to show it off and uplift those just as passionate about music as we are. Our social media (@VapidHaus on all platforms) is home to the highlights of our services, and we’d love to meet you there.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Individual connections that our founding team made with likeminded creatives in Denver’s music scene built the foundation of our reputation. We began as college students prioritizing simply showing up for those around us. Streaming local music, attending local shows, and telling our friends to do the same built Vapid Haus. We are now a web of resources that musicians, listeners, and creatives of all sorts interested in Denver’s music scene can rely on. The internet has become increasingly important in musicians’ careers and listeners’ experiences. We value that wholeheartedly, and social media certainly plays a huge role in our community. However, we ensure that we show up in person as well, and promote opportunities for others to do the same. We’ve made sure that our local music community has faces to the name Vapid Haus, which also helps us to introduce likeminded creatives to one another. Vapid Haus goes beyond the online space to use our skills and connections to create community in music.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Continuous learning has been the most rewarding aspect of Vapid Haus. We’ve been fostering our skills in centering community alongside promotions for a couple of years now, and we still face challenges everyday. As the world we exist within becomes increasingly individualistic and centered around oversaturated online spaces, finding ways to build and sustain genuine connections can be difficult. By promoting local artists, there is a library of in person events and online spaces that music lovers can engage with. We have found friends and our favorite local music through learning how multimedia promotions can make connections. Through Vapid Haus, we have seen the power of community in action. Local music has shaped our lives in Denver.
