We recently connected with Kyle Hammer and have shared our conversation below.
Kyle, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
My business partner, Kyla, and I had been working together for years and became fast friends. The previous bakery where we worked was so important to our story as it helped us evolve our skills and relationship, but we knew there was more to be had from the work we could create. Around the time that Covid hit, we had the realization that many others experienced, in that we could be doing more with our lives, we wanted to push the boundaries, and from there the idea of branching out to start our own business was born! Kyla and I are both self taught – actually, she taught me how to decorate, and we know what we are capable of in terms of how much product we can create in such a short amount of time. We knew that we could do it, and almost 4 years in, we are definitely doing it!

Kyle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have gained my work ethic from my family, specifically my parents and grandparents who always worked hard to provide the best life for us. Kyla and I both have decades of service industry experience and if you can make it in restaurants, you can make it anywhere! The similar work ethic is what allows us to be a driving force in our field. We may be certified home bakers now, but we work 40-60 hours a week, while maintaining a home, raising kids, and not spiraling into total oblivion! We push one another to be the best possible versions of ourselves, and that shows in our work. Our clients are people who we have been serving for years and years, and keep coming back. Our speed allows us to create unique cakes for all occasions without breaking the bank, and our customer service experiences give us the unique ability to create cakes that are perfect for the clients’ needs, while maintaining our esthetic and brand. We really pride ourselves on the relationships we have built with our customers. Oftentimes the relationship can start with a wedding cake, that turns into a baby shower cake, that turns into a first birthday order and so on and so forth. We have cultivated years worth of relationships with so many clients that we can now call friends.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Working while pregnant. I worked up until about 2 weeks before giving birth, and went back to work about a month and a half after having my son, and I would do it all over again.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
One of the most important lessons I was ever taught growing up was to not be afraid to use your connections, and don’t burn bridges. Living life like this has allowed us to cultivate relationships with people who know how hard we work, see our product, and believe in us enough to want to invest. We wouldn’t be able to do it without their help.
