Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nikki Law. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nikki, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
In 2015, I had been a nail technician for 9 years and I decided that I wanted to open a small nail salon for just me. My husband and I moved to Harbor Springs about 10 months before. It was November and we live in a resort town so definitely the slow season. I found what I thought was the perfect space. I was absolutely terrified. We had 2 middle school age children, my husband was unable to work due to a health issue and I had $6,000 that I was supposed to open my salon with. I opened Polished on Main in November 2015. I was the scariest thing I had ever done and the biggest risk I had ever made. I worked incredibly hard and was busy right away. I got involved in the community more than I already was. And now fast forward 9 years. Polished on Main has grown to a full salon and spa and I have 11 employees. It has been a wild ride.

Nikki, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
At Polished on Main, we take immense pride in the dedication, expertise, and passion that defines our salon. With 19 years of experience as a nail technician, my journey in this industry has been shaped by a deep commitment to ongoing education and knowledge. While my original goal was to become a nurse, I discovered my true passion in the nail industry, where I could make a difference by elevating the standard of care and creativity in nail services.
What sets Polished on Main apart is the extensive training and genuine passion that drives our entire team. We don’t just focus on providing services; we are committed to mastering our craft and staying at the forefront of the industry. Every team member shares this dedication, ensuring that our clients receive not just a service but an experience backed by knowledge and skill.
What I’m most proud of is the incredible group of individuals that make up Polished on Main. The sense of community, both within the salon and with our clients, has been the foundation of our growth. It’s this support and the collective hard work that continue to fuel our success and inspire us every day.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
To maintain high morale within a team, I believe it starts with leading by example. You can’t expect your team to do anything you aren’t willing to do yourself. It’s about genuinely caring and investing in each team member’s growth and well-being. Transparency is key—being open with your team builds trust and respect. Equally important is listening to their suggestions and recognizing that you won’t always have the right answer. Finally, clear expectations are essential. Everyone should know what’s expected of them, and it’s your responsibility to ensure those standards are communicated and understood. This approach fosters a strong, motivated, and cohesive team.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
This question has one answer. Passion and drive. I have always wanted to learn and knowing there is always room for growth. Also if you never have anyone tell you what you could do better how will you ever grow. That is how I got to where I am today.
