Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Christian Freiburger. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Christian, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
In 2023 I started attending college classes for psychology. Since then I have had to work part time, attend my classes, complete homework assignments and learn Ableton (a music production software) all at the same time. It has been a challenge for me to balance all this at once but I am happy that I am keeping up with all of it. I never realized that the state of the economy would effect me so much but with the rising prices of just about everything it has been much harder to accomplish my goals.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Ive been interested in electronic music since I was 12 or 13 years old, listening to early Skrillex, Flux Pavilion and Griz albums. However I didn’t realize how powerful music could be until I went to my first major music festival in 2017, Oregon Eclipse. There I had a life changing experience which inspired me to change my life entirely. I decided to move to the mountains of Colorado with the main goal of snowboarding and just seeing where life would take me. I spent a lot of time on the mountain snowboarding and working in a kitchen listening to music. At that time I was really getting into artists like Shpongle, Ott and Clozee. In 2019 I moved to Denver so I could afford to make it to Burning Man. I was fascinated with how much music there was to listen to out there. Then COVID happened. During the pandemic I decided to start DJing. Over time I decided that I really wanted to produce music. Being in choir during my primary education and playing guitar since I was 12 gave me confidence in my musical background. Since I have started my journey with performing and creating music I have performed at Burning Man, the Colorado regional burning man event called Apogaea and at the annual Denver burning man decompression party. Im happy that Ive been able to make connections with various sound camps over the past 4 years and that the burner community has given me the opportunity to share music. Recently I have been working on an Ableton live set with inspiration coming from artists like Monolink and Be Svedson as well as making Psytrance.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is being proud that I made something completely from the ground up. Whether its a painting, a song that I made or a Dj set that I curated I know that it wouldn’t have been possible without a lot of time, dedication and learning on my part. I could have been the person to just attend concerts and parties without thinking much of it but I felt that I needed to educate myself on whats really going on up on stage. I wanted to see if I could create a life changing experience or at the very least a positive experience for others.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Support smaller ‘underground’ music events. Without these the dance music scene would not exist. If it wasn’t for artists and creatives getting a platform at small events then they would have never gained the experience or popularity to grow. Large scale events are awesome, the production we see today at large events and festivals has really grown over the past 20 years but it started as a small niche in the music community. In the US I see genres like Techno and Psytrance gaining a lot of popularity in the next 10 years but we need to patrons to support smaller artists and production companies instead of only buying tickets from established companies like Insomniac events, AEG and Live Nation.
